Unhappy Oil leak!! From my 10-day old S63 AMG

I've only had my new S63 for 10 days.... and for the last 4 days it's been parked in the garage. The most I've driven it is the 250+ miles from Dallas to Austin when I bought it on 8/29

This evening I backed it out and noticed an oil puddle on the floor!

What gives? Has anyone had this issue on a car this new? Could it be as simple as something not being tightened, or God forbid - something more complex like a leaking gasket or pipe?

I'm really bummed out about this - can't imagine how this could happen especially if these cars are checked out as much as MB claims they are.

I doubt it is anything serious. I know it is an aggravation , but I would take it in and just let someone at the shop check it out. Have you checked under the engine to see if it is just the drain plug? See if you can determine the source of the problem. Maybe something simple needs to be checked at the shop. I'm sure you don't have a major problem.....just a nuisance to get it fixed.

Thanks! That makes me feel better. I REALLY hope it's just a drain plug or something not tightened and not any gasket stuff bec. I know that can be a pain when you're talking original engine seal.

Coming to think of it - it could be from my previous S550 (but don't tell that to PurpleHaze )....... just kidding! The leak looked pretty fresh

Well, I really hope the best for you on this. I just can't imagine it being anything big.

Don't let it damper your excitement for the new purchase of this incredible car. Enjoy that new car high. I'm sure its nothing major. Probably something wasn't tightened properly. Dealer will fix asap. Enjoy a new C class for a couple days while its in the shop. The new C's are quite fun. The when you get the 63 back you will think you went to heaven again.

Guess we are all on right now. May as well do a conference call. The 350 must be impressive because I was quite impressed with the 300. Its easy to forget how tossable the "little" car is. Easy to zip around. But then just as impressive to get behind the wheel of our 5000lb beasts and amazed what things it can do for the mass.

There are some who say the S63 is "not as fast as it's made out to be"... inferring that it doesn't do 60mph in quite under 5.4 secs. as MB-AMG claim, but I got to tell you that sucker is fast! Plenty fast from dead stop to about 50 mph. But for me, it's the handling/cornering that are truely amazing - never imagined that it would handle like a BMW 540i. ...

Happy to pm a number if your ever in the real need for car talk.
The wife thinks I'm crazy on here. But I say its either these guys or you.
She's heard enough car talk to last a lifetime
Better yet lets put some miles on. Between Tex, AL, CA: I say Denver is a good middle ground. Rent a race track for a day. For fun we rent a few exotics too.

Not sure of anyone saying the 63 is not that fast. I'm sure its at least 4.5 fast but like you said thats just one samll piece of the fun. Besides isn't 4.5 about Diablo fast or 360 Ferrari fast. Pretty great thrill for you plus 3.

Oh i forgot one small detail. Mile high city will give good advantage to the 600turbo cars over the 63 normal aspiration due to altitude.

AG, perhaps you should find a well-regarded dealer that will deliver a car that's competently prepped....do they have decent MB dealers in Austin?

Seems like the major dealers in SF/LA/NYC treat their repeat customers rather well....sometimes lowest poss prices aren't best values for those who value time and quality....not much in life is "free"...

Drive the 280 fwy btwn SF and SiliconValley...arguably fastest urban freeway in world....many mid-range acceleration bursts between clumps of traffic....within 5 mins, anyone quickly realizes 63 tq is simply adequate, arguably inadequate for those accustomed to 600/65 tq; 600 has superb tq, but marginal brakes/chassis for any high-speed, emergent maneuver; 65 has legendary tq and AMG's brilliant chassis/brakes, best appreciated on smooth, dry stretches (which don't challenge 65's traction) but can be tricky/downright annoying during CA's occasional winter rains....

WSH - I bought the car in Dallas at Ewing. When I bought my previous S550 from the one Austin MB dealer in Georgetown, it was prepped pretty well - no complaints. We'll have to see how this latest problem goes.

Oil in new car can't be brown, it is pretty much clear. Can it be just a dog's poo?

Okay - just got back from the dealership....

BAD NEWS

I do indeed have an oil leak! And a bad one at that. As was explained by the service manager - the "front engine cover plate is leaking oil" !! Yup - on a $136,000 car that's 10 days old! Thanks Mercedes - for doing such a wonderful job. Great quality control - I'm sure the guys at Lexus are sweating bullets

To cut a long story short - the nit wits at Ewing say that they "prepped the car" and ran it through a "rigorous check point" and that there were no issues. Of course this is the "sales sleaze ball manager" telling me this and I'm sure he knows a lot about "front engine cover plates" . So then I ask uummm .... aaa....how come I'm leaking oil? He tells me "anything can happen" - "maybe on the 200 mile drive back to Austin something got messed up". I'm like, okaaaaay........ so is driving an S63 for 200+ miles a no no? Of course, by now he's gagging with his foot firmly in his mouth, so he doesn't quite know how to answer that question. I then say okay - MB-Austin is on top of it and I'll be escalating this up the chain.

MB Austin then tells me that the part (a gasket like seal) might have to be ordered from Germany and will take 3-4 weeks

10 mins. ago MB-Austin calls me and tells me that they've "pulled some strings" and will have the part in by Wed. of next week.... and as a goodwill gesture will keep my car indoors this weekend so that it's not affected by Ike (the Hurricane, that is)

So, in the meantime I'm stuck driving around in a brand new C350... and wondering just what other surprises will crop up. This has to suck big time.

That's awful news.
You know, I hate to say this, but doesn't AMG engines tend to give more trouble than the assembly line engines??? Seems like I've read on several occasions that they burn more oil and other similar problems.

Anyway, I think they should at least give you back $5K and repair the car for your trouble and embarrassment because if you took a car in on trade with this problem, they'd nail your **** $15K in depreciation.

Sorry for my rant as I may be overboard but I always think of how much they screw people on trades and how one-sided it is.
I'm speaking with the Ewing sales manager. I just left him a message telling him that I want a new car. I've also emailed the salesman who sold me the car.

As far as the flaw - I'm told that it's in the non-AMG part of the engine and can be seen from the top.

Sigh

Trumpet, I don't think you are overboard,
AG should, I repeat SHOULD ask for a brand new replacement.
I know, I know... lots of parts working togerther + Murphy's Law + some other BS.
This is not happening on MB car this caliber.
If (by any remote chance (sales stealers)) does - demand a new car.
They pulled some strings...
Trust me they will understand your (obvious) argument.
Sorry AG to hear your mishap.
Mark.

Thanks mark. This is unchartered territory for me. I'm actually quite dumbfounded. Didn't expect something like this to happen.

Sounds like there's a batch of bad timing case covers. It sounds like the part you're describing.

AG, I'm pissed off.
Don't let them off the hook by one iota.
Demand, I repeat demand a new car.
Long time ago I had a similar situation (with Range Rover). Yeah. Nasty fuc..rs. They said - we are here to make money, I said - I'm here to drive a new (replacement) car.
At that time I lived in NY, I couldn't use any firearms, but you can living in Texas... (just kidding).
Mark.

I KNOW EXACTLY how you feel. Just listening to the sales manager and how he's trying to dismiss the issue make me want to reach out and SLAP him.

The amazing thing is that this is Mercedes-Benz we're talking about. Sadly enough, this seems to be a common occurrance among German auto dealers. I can't say I've ever had this feeling with Japanese dealers. Ofcourse with Japanese auto makers, these types of quality issues rarely crop up....

I guess I'll wait to hear from him by tomorrow. In the meantime my car is being worked on...
