I was able to get $21K off msrp just over the phone. When I got there, they showed me a '08 demo (7K miles) for $78.3K which I rejected along with a lease payment of $2400 (crazy stealership). The only other leftover '08 S550 was a Blk/Savannah 4Matic AMG pkg (msrp $105K). Dealer added clear bra, LoJack, paint protection, blah blah blah marking it up to $115K. I told them to take all that **** off because I didn't NEED it.
Keep in mind, even with $22K off dealers have factory incentives and hold back money....never accept the first two deals (in my case it took about ten trips to the manager). Everyone should be able to get these cars for $20-30K off and lease payment of $1600 (tier 1). My final cap reduction cost was $83250.

The difference on the '09 are the window switches are no longer flat, woodsteering wheel is standard, and the paddle shifters are visible. Nothing worth passing for on the deals you folks have been recieving!

Don,
The $78.5K was before sales tax/title and license fees. In CA the tax rate is 8.25%, so that alone is about $6K.
To get blind spot assistence you'll need to get the distronic plus package which is about $3K. I wanted that very much, but the only car I could find with that option was Capri Blue which wasn't for me.

I fail to see how these 08s are deals. Its nearly 2009. The car is already 1 year old and you get the depx hit when u sell the car back. The discounts should be even higher.

If someone isn't concerned with telling his friends he has an '09 and can live with slightly inferior window switches (big deal), then you get what is essentially the same car as an 09 for almost 25% off.
If the 09 was a totally different car, Id see your point, but since its not, I think its an amazing deal.

Sorry, but I disagree with this.

Then why not get an 07 and save 40-50 %?
ask your accountant

When does Mercedes begin their new model years? September? October? We are already 2-3 months into the new model year. I understand there is nearly no difference between the 08 and and 09s and I would probably buy an 08 in this case as well but I would push for a better deal.

Given average mileage 10k/year, whats the depreciation on a S class in its first year? Around 20~30% no? which would render the value of the car at 70-80K. Which is precisely what the dealers are offering. Hence my belief that its not a deal, moreso when there are tons of cars sitting in Long Beach. Mileage or not, the age also factors into the depx.

While I agree that you can pick up a 1 year old 08 S550 for less than the dealer prices for new ones, I'd have no problem with paying the difference for another year of warranty, zero miles, and the first butt in the seat syndrome. However, the additional 20-30k, that I would absolutely not pay.

No idea about any tax implications. For me, who upgrades every 2-3 years, and pays cash for a new car, my accountant says buying a leftover, depreciated 08 was NOT the better choice. Therfore, ask your accountant, or you can run the numbers yourself. Also, with the new 09, you get Exactly the color and options you want. Why spend $80k and make concessions?

That is the strangest logic I've ever heard.
buy new 09, pay $100k.
Sell/trade in 3 years, get $50k
Buy new 08, pay $80k.
Sell/trade in 3 years, get $40k
Using a 4% discount rate, the NPV for A is -$55,698, and the NPV for B is -$44,440
Then again, buying a new MB with cash and trading it in every 2 to 3 years is a great way to lose about $30k every two to three years.
But hey, its your money.

I'm about 4 months from an MBA myself. Where did you go?
What numbers are not reflective? Discount rate (it would need to be huge to make a difference here)?
Id say a 10k difference at resale time is not unreasonable.
I also forgot the additional taxes you would be paying on that $20k difference (a negligible difference, but one all the same)
Then again, maybe you can explain this to me.
If you know you're going to be selling the cars every 2 to 3 years, why not just lease them, and save yourself the depreciation (not to mention im sure you could find some tax write offs in there)?

1- If you buy a new car, you pay all the depreciation from the start. New car prices are inflated very highly. Would you rather have an E550 or an S600? The S600 is a superior car in every respect, but they are basically the same price, even the E550 being a bit more, if you were to buy the E550 new and the S600 used from 07.
2- If you wanted to lease an S600, youd be paying ridiculous amounts a month due to the depreciation in the 1st years which is killer.
Unless you like the fact that the car is new versus what the car actually is, or you can take the tax benefits, I don't really see the point of leasing.

That makes no sense

As of right now, leasing is awful, tax benefits or not. The lease deals right now are out of the question from what I've seen.
Normally , I would have agreed with you.
