Keyless locking

Hey there guys,

On my S320 cdi (UK) w221 I have the keyless go option, but I have a quick question. I was always under the impression that this option allows me to unlcok AND lock my car keylessly. The car unlocks fine when I open the door, but with the key in my pocket I struggle to lock it without fiddling around with the door handle sensor.

I took this to my dealer and they said that the car is not meant to lock itself and to lock it; I must use the key? Is this true? I get a feeling they're telling porkies.

Thanks

Not sure if the UK cars are different, but there should be a small square on the outside part of the door handle. You touch that area with your finger and the car should lock. Don't grip/touch the inside, because that will unlock it again.

Should be able to touch anywhere on outside of any handle to lock.
Usually takes a second or two on mine.

slide your finger on the "outside" of the door handle.

I can just lightly touch anywhere on the door handle (as if you're pushing the door closed, not as if you're pulling the door open), and on any of the four handles. Comes in handy when my hands and arms are full of stuff!

If yours is being any more stubborn than what I described, take it into the dealer.

Cheers guys, that's what I thought. It does have the square sensor panel thing on the doorhandle, but is very stubborn and does not work flawlessly. I just normally give up and use the key too. This is something the dealer should definately know about rather than telling me I should be using the key to lock it! I'll take it into another dealer for them to look at.

Thanks

Keep in mind there is a one second delay or so between the time you touch the panel and when you hear the door lock. For a very long time I thought mine was stubborn and not operating correctly when in fact I was just rushing it.

I keep learning more and more about this subject. I didn't realize that you didn't have to touch the square pad area to lock it. I went out today and verified what you just said and it is true...all you have to do is touch the outer side of the handle mostly anywhere and it locks.

I also went to the car wash today and it can be annoying as just simply spraying water on the handle or light touches will lock/unlock the car. Of course, I realize I should put the key inside the car while washing it to avoid this problem but I just didn't do it.

BTW it isn't necessary to touch the handle for the full second. Just touch it briefly, and the a second or so later the car locks.

This is how I do it. Close the door, start walking while sliding my finger on the door handle, I should hear the lock when I pass the side mirror. Never stand beside the car and touch the handle and wait for it to lock. Even though it's only take a second. It's feel rare to stand beside the car and wait. If I don't hear the lock when I passed the mirror, I just keep walking and pull out the key to lock it remotely.

Yep. Even that was something I learned only about 6 months ago. Before that I kept thinking I had to make a very deliberate and lengthy press upon the pad area. Even though the technology seems great , I was previously debating whether or not I'd rather have an actual pressable button to lock it from the outside as we used to have on the W220s. Now that I've learned these new hints, I may finally enjoy the keyless locking feature even more as they are on the W221s. This is something that maybe the salesmen/women should cover in more detail when delivering the car.

Believe it or not, I actually use the rear door to lock the doors 80% of the time because I usually walk away from the car heading behind the car as I walk to my office , etc. Usually it takes the door about 1/2 second to finish closing on its own and then by the time I'm at the rear door, it's ready for me to touch the rear door.
Strange I guess, but true.

I'm undecided as to whether mine is malfunctioning or not. Occasionally it seems like it doesn't want to lock. Usually it eventually works, but yesterday I had to take the key out of my pocket and press the button.

I wonder what the thinking is to put a recession in the handle where the black button used to be given it's not necessary to touch that location to lock?

As I wrote my previous post, I was thinking the same thing. I guess it's there as a representation that the feature exists along with an area that you can tell an unfamiliar person (one time user for example) where to touch to lock it just to keep the directions of its use simple
