I have not bought the car yet. Actually, my lease on E350 expires in 6 months, so I'm planning to buy a car somewhere in January 2010. Ussualy prices go down at this time of the year. Right now I'm still deciding between S-Class and LS460. I like both cars, but S is better as a car and LS seems like more reliable, but less fun to drive. I'm planning to buy a car with existing factory warranty and decide before warranty expires about extended from MB. For LS - there is no need for warranty.

I have friends and family members that have Lexus cars and they have had issues just like other cars. My mothers GS430 had defective mirrors and if not for the warranty would have cost her 1K plus. Recalls for brakes/steering and other issues were covered under warranty. I decided to purchase her a Lexus Platinum extended warranty for her car.
A friend has a Lexus 460 and also has had electrical problems covered under warranty. I would not own any expensive car without a extended warranty.
My S550 has been perfect so far and I know a few others that have them(07 and 08 models) and have not had issues up to around 60K miles. Good luck deciding because both are nice cars. Personally I like the S550 more then the Lexus but the Lexus does cost less.

You'll be surprised. Manheim prices for 2007 S and LS with about 30K miles are almost the same. The difference is about 1-2 grand. I'd say - you can buy a nice car for about $45K. Of course it's not going to be AMG or 4Matic for S class and it's not going to be Long LS460. The way it goes now I hope to buy 2008 S class for the same money on january.

Looking in the Autotrader the other day at various prices, I noticed prices have gone down (out here) a pretty solid amount for '07 S550's since the last time I looked. High $30's aren't far off for Indie Lots (practically already there), and I don't think low $40's for CPO cars are gonna be thaat far away either, albeit definitely not here yet.

There's a super clean CPO '07 with only 40K on it going for $46K.

And a Indie lot '07 with an apparently good Carfax (1 owner) and 41K Miles going for $42K:

They're getting there....

Hell yeah it is ^^^^ I've been tempted recently but am just too happy with my 211 still and don't see much added benefit in making the jump at this time....
But seriously, let's get past anyone's opinions on aesthetic, or anything subjective, and realize it's still a newly designed and engineered flagship Sedan by Mercedes, as well being arguably the best and most coddling Luxury Sedan at doing what it is intended to do, period..... And you can get some examples for just around $40K.... Pretty damn nice bang for the buck there.... Almost ridiculous. Such is the nature of the beast though, once these Luxo cars start getting 3+ years old, you can literally start stealing them, prices start getting into territory of much much lesser New cars.

As previous owner of the 220 and 230 600s (own neither currently) the 221 is a very tempting proposition. I live in an urban setting now though, so its size has parking headaches. The 550 model is very adequate, in normal driving situations did not miss the TT V12, the throttle actually feeling very responsive more of the time, but I would absolutely not put up with an ABC-less example, the suspension is THAT good. As for $40K examples, I would be wary, in this class of automobile that may appear cheap, but a poorly maintained example will catch up to the expense with repairs. These cars may be a "steal" to initially acquire, but they never got cheaper to maintain: getting a neglected model will exacerbate this.
