I've done a few of the tail light upgrades. The proper way is to use SAM unit.

Thanks we are aware of the SAM method, but we are experimenting to find other ways. It has been done without a new SAM like kartoys and some other shops in the L.A area has successfully accomplished.

SAM method is the easiest (if you can find a tech to code it) but cost more.
The cost may be worth your time though, for myself I like to tinker with things and diy whatever I can so it's a learning experience that I enjoy.

Sam method requires to change a wire harness for pre-facelifted W221's. Do you aware how much will it cost?

This is incorrect - no wiring changes are required.

The top LED row of '10 taillights requires a separate power supply why do you think all this fuss about connecting the power supply from licence plate light or crosswire top & the buttom led? So I just can't imaging how it can be done with changing a rear SAM only.

okay guys i want the mopf 2010 rear lights also on my w221 2007 .
I know how to replace the light units but not how to get it work. Some say you need wire changes and some say you need new sam. How can I get it work simply by myself. Can someone tell me step by step maybe with pictures how to get it working.

I have an early '07 S550, with the light upgrade - in fact, I was one of the first, if not the first person to do the conversion and post the results here (check old threads). No wiring changes are required when using the 2010 rear SAM that's coded in a 2010 vehicle first and then placed in the '06-'09 S550 (eu models were available in '06, US only saw the new S in '07)...

The wiring is required if you keep the old rear SAM.

I did this conversation in Aug 2009. Crosswiring method. I wasn't happy with the results. It gave me usual top half dimmer row problem (rear side marker error free). I found this thread and saw some people changing rear SAM. I checked with 3 local delers, all of them told me I need to change a whole wiring harness WITH the rear SAM. My car is early '06 and I'm in EU

Hey Serge. Can you disconect a plug which goes to taillight and count a wires in this plug if you don't mind? I believe '10 model has 1 extra wire.

SAM replacement didn't work for jtanoyo1 he ended up with a rewiring. Any idea why?

I don't think wiring it to the license plate lights is a good idea. Different load I think, that's why it's much brighter.

Very cool - I did mine about a month later... Can you PM me your phone number? Maybe we can chat on the phone. I'll find some time and check the harness pinout for you... Not sure why the rear SAM upgrade did not for for Jtanoyo - what caused him to rewire? Lights didn't work at all or something else? I've folks try to code the SAM in the pre-facelift cars and that won't work. That's the usual issue people run into.

I had a chance to take apart the trunk panels since I was rewiring my rear view camera module to work while driving forward : -)

Here is the deal - it's impossible for the harness in 2010 to have an extra wire, whoever told you that is wrong - the 2010 lights have exactly the same number of pins as the 2006-09 lights (total of 6). I can see how someone might have assumed that looking at the harness, because there is an extra empty pin slot, but it does not align to any pin on the 2010 lights. Some lights showing 6 wires on the harness mapping correctly to 6 pins in the 2010 lights are attached.

Now when you are describing the "top half dimmer row problem", are you getting the problem on running lights or the brake? I had that problem originally with the old SAM, but with the new rear SAM - the top and bottom rows are lit up with exact same intensity. See attached pics. The only difference I see is when I apply the brake - only the bottom row light up with greater intensity in concert with the brake light in the rear window...

Has anyone seen a 2010 S with brake applied? Is it only the bottom row that's lit up? That's my understanding...

CL55_Serge: bro, you need to get the exhaust tip. They do sell the S65 exhaust tips in Saudi Arabia and I think the should sell it here too.

Yes - for sure... I don't want to go S63 round tip style, I'd like to fab up some square tips, but with all the projects haven't got around to it. The car barely gets driven, only when we take the baby out so it's kind of in the back of mind...

I found this on EPC part# 2214901527 try to ask the dealer about it, I think it is the S65 tip and listed for about $270

Really??? Will do, this would be great if it's really the dual hex S65 style tip... I tried to order those, but got nowhere - the dealers weren't ableto look up separate part number without the entire muffler system.

Just ordered these from the local dealer - will let everyone know if these are indeed the S65 tip as we know it. The dealer folks seemed to think it was...

Left 2214901527 (for comparison shopping, parts.com $186.30), right 2214901627 (187.45) are indeed s65 tail pipe covers.
