Updated 2010 w221 taillights on older w221

Ran across this browsing in craigs list, a 2007 s550 with the updated taillights. I personally like it and been interested for a while now. Sorry was not able to copy pics but here is the link.

That's a nice looking S550, I like the tail light as well. I wonder how much they're trying to sell it for, it has to many miles on it to get a good price.

Damn that thing is CLEAN. I wonder if it's Photoshopped.

I'm so glad M-B is going back to their trademarked double strip taillight design, my favourite tail-light design they've used yet, and interestingly the rear now at first glance (and I'm assuming from far as well) looks relatively similar to a pre-F.L W220 or W211.

However, that said I think the double painted strips with the white middle are more of a W221 exclusive "trademark", and think the car looks more unique with those.

Anyway, how the hell did they get their hands on those lights??

That's exactly what I'd like to know. I spent a couple of hours last night surfing the web trying to find out where to order these lights from... to no avail.

EPC shows left 2218200564, right 22182000664 (for comparison shopping, parts.com $289.80 each) confirm with dealer parts.

Thanks Konigstiger! I called the local MB dealership (Princeton, NJ) and their service/parts person told me that the 2010 S550 tail lights won't fir my 08 S550. Has anyone ordered these lights and they fit?

He must not know what he's talking about. I don't think the boot/fenders/bumpers are shaped any differently on the F.L.

I'm still challenging my own honesty about these new taillights. If I had just come out of a coma of 4 years, didn't know one model W221 from another , and was asked which taillight did I like the best, I believe that I would choose the original ones over the new ones. (I think)

Thanks K-A. I know it's probably going to be a dumb question, but what exactly is EPC? I don't mind paying the $ at parts.com but I was wondering if the lights would fit my car for sure! Any help is greatly appreciated.

IMO I don't think fitment will be the issue more than the wiring is the same to work properly.

I have to agree. I think the concept of carrying the body color into the lights was fairly unique and looked elegant. I'm sad to see them moving away from that after only 4 years.

The new ones do look nice, but is really more LED's the way to go?

makes the car look a bit like a 211 E-class from the back.

not bad, but not great either.

22s are too big...20s are plenty and i prefer the S to be kept classy, updated tails look good though

I agree. I like the 211's butt, and I also like the OG 221's butt. The F.L 221's butt looking like the 211's butt kind of puts it a step behind both to me.

I'll reserve final judgement until I see them in person though.

I do see a good thing happening from this though, hopefully: M-B going back to their trademarked double-slit-white taillights.

i like the tails from the 07-09 run better. i haven't seen the 'new' ones in person yet but the 'old' ones were unique with the paint strip running through them. i'm not familiar with any other car that has those - and now benzo changed them - just to add the fad leds - and sacrificed the unique look in the process. i think the 'new' ones look like an old 211 e-class as i think others have mentioned. not bad - just not unique anymore.

I agree, i have seen the new lights in London and they look ordinary, just like any other LED lights.

Just picked up W221, was wondering if anyone but that dealer done this tail light conversion yet? I am thinking of doing it.

I know this is an old post, but I am 99% sure that was my old S550 you guys were talking about - I sold mine around that time and had fitted the 2010 tails to it. I also had 22's and kept my car immaculate - SO thank you for the compliments!

I just wanted to chime in and say YES, the 2010 tails DO fit on the 07-09 W221. I travel a lot for a living and I just so happened to be in Germany last year and I went to the giant Mercedes dealership in Munich to buy the tails. They were available quite a few months earlier in Europe. There is a bit of trickery to get the wiring right, but it does work. In fact, I just bought another S550 that I will pick up when I get back from my current business trip, and I will once again be retrofitting the tails. I will do my best to take pictures of the hackery necessary for such a transplant to be successful.

If, in the mean time anyone has any questions about fitting these lights, it would be my pleasure to walk you through it. I am toying with the idea of doing a complete facelift on my new S (it is also a 2007 but better appointed and black) including the LCM.

What is the LCM?
I am considering getting an 07-09 S550 and was just wondering how much of the new 2010 I can retrofit onto it.
I see the tail lights are possible - great! I saw these in person today at the dealer and the new ones remind me of a Bentley or Rolls Royce (sort of).

What about the front bumper with the LED running lights?

LCM is the Light Control Module - without this you may have difficulties fitting the new headlights. It may be easy, but most of the time with active/self leveling headlights the systems in place to move the low beam are not always the same year to year. The new front bumper, rear bumper, sideskirts, LED running lights and mirrors will bolt right on. The real-deal will be to retrofit the new dual-view screen. I will most likely attempt the headlight retrofit at some point because the LED blinkers are SO much better than the plain-jane incandescents.

Why not just buy a 2010 you may wonder?
