Tires for S550 4Matic
Hello,
Have an 08 S550, 15k miles and the tires are about done. The Continentals have been fine, but I only got 15k miles with maybe 2000 freeway miles.
This is not my daily driver, nor do I drive this car for performance purposes, it's just our nice sedan. We have SUV's, so it would be rare that we drive this car in the snow. Maybe ice. I made a mistake once putting Pilot Sports 2 on my E-Class, they were extremely noisey. I have Pilots A/S on the SL and they seem to do very well for all-weather are quiet, but they too are not exactly a good wearing tire. Would be nice to get a least 20k miles on the next S-Class tires.
Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Kevin

Seems like in various car mag tests of all-season vs winter vs summer perf tires, A/S tires (no matter tire brand/model) have significantly increased braking distances (IIRC, an added ~20ft stopping dist from 60MPH)....obviously, stopping dists have serious implications for one's active/passive safety in any emergent braking/evasive maneuver, even if car used for routine commuting at legal speeds
4500+lb cars like S550 place lots of wear on tires/brakes, even in "normal" driving....and may develop flat spots if car not driven for extended periods...doubt any 4500+ lb cars have tires that last >20K mis (assuming tires remain competent for braking/traction)
IMO, silly to compromise safety of a highly-engineered $100K car over a few extra bucks for competent tires
