I realize the 17's may drive better but form over function is key. I'm just thinking about preserving the look and driving my S550 (not 4matic) with the 19's. Any one do okay with this or is there a good reason to get into smaller tires?

Smaller are more practical but are a bit girlie I downsized from 19" to 17" and I don't regret it and the car seems stealthy among other cars. If you keep 19" you will stand out for sure. If you prefer comfort, get 17".

There're varying opinions on how exactly those large rims "stand out" ;-)

I'm loving the look of the stock 2010 18" rims. The car looks incredibly classy and proportional. Personally, I would never want to make my car look like a carriage; "girlie" or not, my manhood is safe regardless of the rim size.

I agree, I had 18" for a while and the look was the best. Very proportional and appropriate. But to they felt heavy after the AMG 19" so I went to 17". I don't care about the looks either.. you cannot see it from the inside anyway. Actually my wife preferred the AMG look but if I go for bigger wheels in summer, 18" will be the max.

I guess what I'm saying is that I like the particular stock 19's that came with the designo and wonder if they will hold onto the road well enough if I put snows on them. In talking to Luke at Tirerack it is even cheaper to go with 17's with Moda MD1 plus the dunlops than to put Pirellis on my wheels. I stilll think I like the look of 19's.

I'm sure you will have no problem on snow. How wide are your 19"? 275?

Yes. 275 back 255 front. I assume I would go 255 front rear for snows. Thanks for the input.

Let me know! I'm sure you will be happy either way.

Regarding the looks, I will try to snap a pic for comparison 19" vs 17" it's a huge difference.

17" wheels seem a bit small for the bid body S-Class. Stock 18 or 19 looks nice, 20 stocks look very sporty as well. Would be interesting to see pictures, but notice that most large cars have proportionally larger wheels from the factory to fill up the wheel wells. See Maybach and Phantom for example. When I compare the spread of S-class models from the 80s to now, the stock wheels are also proportionally larger as new models come out.

For follow up I just wanted to report back that I went with the Sotto Zero 19's. With heavy snow in the area I have had time to drive. Does as well as my A8L ( 19's All Season). I'm glad I took form over function
