New To Mercedes

we have owned a lexus ls since 1994. our first two were ls 400s (CPO), then a new ls430 in 2003. Then in 2007, we went for a new ls460.

Our lease ends in early june for the ls460. we looked at the 2010 ls 460 a couple of weeks ago. could not drive one as the only one they had was sold but not delivered, so we were able to sit in it. we really saw no difference between a 2010 and a 2007. the salesman said he would call us when they received a new one, but its been two weeks, and we have heard nothing. we then drove a 2010 bmw 7. not that impressed. we also looked at the audi 8, but not impressed.

we then went to mercedes. it was our intent to drive the E-class, but before we could, we saw the S. what a magnificent looking car. so we drove it and it was phenomenal. the s drives better than an ls, exceeds our expectations for luxury and comfort.

so, two days ago we made the deal on a new 2010 S class. it is silver/ash, P02, Driver Assistance Package, night view assist, heated steering wheel, and splitview.

our only concern is reliability. the ls had its share of issues, most notably the wind noise problem, but in general, it was really trouble free.

our deal for the S seems really strong. we think it is do to the part that they are "converting" a lexus owner.

we look forward to our jouney over the next three years.

Enjoy your new ride... I have noticed that the desire amongst many in the Lexus community to believe that all Mercedes are unreliable is almost religious... mainly based on a temporary lapse in some quality areas that are getting on for almost 10 years ago in previous models... and yet even Consumer Reports recommends the current S-Class... Your car is superb and you will be absolutely fine!

Welcome!

Congratulations rdrtkd on your new car. The more time you spend in the car the more you are going to love it. Of course the LS is also a fine car but you will notice the S-Class is in a league of its own in terms of luxury and ride quality. With regards to build quality and reliability, the current generation S-Class has been excellent. No car is perfect of course. In addition, much of your experience with the car is also based on your relationship with your dealer and this is where Lexus has typically done very well. Good luck and enjoy the ride.

I'm positive it will be a good one. Back in 1998, we were offered a gently used 1998 MB S600. I bought it and kept it until 2004. I also bought a 1998 Lexus LS400. I have to say, in all fairness, the 600 was something you wish on your worst enemy. 3/4 window motors went. The deforster went, I had numerous suspensions issues. The SC got stuck on and it leaked a good amount of fluid. The appeal was that I was getting a barely used (under 4k miles ) for the privce of an S500 at the time. In the end, I was scared to move this car because it would cost me some degree of money every 150 miles. The Lexus LS400 became the favorite and soon I upgraded to a 2005 ultra luxury.

I had planned on changing the 05 for an '08 or so LS or S550. So far, we I have decided to go with the S550 (having driven both). The interesting pint I want to make is that I see them as both making good business cases. My choise of the S550 speaks to the strength of MB and not the weakness of Lexus.

Deal not done yet, but both are cars that you feel good in. One day soon there'll be a 7 and/or an A8 in my garage, Right now its gloves are off...mb vs Lexus. Being fair...MB takes this round. Lexus makes some of the best cars on the road but this is a real casemaker.

Regards,

Mike
