Potential high mileage buy
Obviously, no warranty other than an extended.
Would people on this forum generally steer clear from a high mileage S-class?
I would also steer clear of this. The problem with the S-Class is that every time you visit the M-B repair garage for something, you're looking at about $500 - $1,000 per visit.
I've got a 2004 S500V4, and I bought more time on the MBCPO warranty when I purchased the car. That was a good investment because the annual repair costs have averaged (AVERAGED!!
) $5,000. Major repairs, covered under warranty, have included replacement of 5 TPMS sensors (includes spare), right front Airmatic suspension work, a faulty GPS antenna (always thought I was in Indiana
), and replacement of the pneumatic pump (that controls the soft close doors and other things). Those are the big ones that come to mind - there have been many more silly little ones.
Granted, the W221 might be built better than the W220, I realize they are totally different cars from totally different phases in M-B history. My engine has been rock solid, as has the transmission and 4Matic Diff., but the ancillary systems have been a headache.

My extended warranty expires in just a few months, and I won't be caught dead in an S-Class outside of M-B factory warranty coverage.
What a great excuse to buy a new car!!!
Just my $0.02. Don't get caught with your pants down dude.
