Navigation functions

Was driving my wife's 09 s and using navigation, I am not used to this unit and found the route turn updates to be much less informative than other manufacurer units. Specifically, the command turn right or left at next intersection seemed to come very late in approaching the turn and there is no name given for the street you are turning on. Also the unit gives me an update no different when you try to recheck the route when I knew i was getting closer to the next turn. What am I missing? I am used to BMW's unit which shows a map with map route real time location in real time, updates that seem to be much faster and road names being part of the prompt. Am I missing something? The car was delivered 11/08 so I don't know if the new disc has any effect on DVD functions. Thanks

Navigation would give an announcement about the next turn well in time and when you approach the turn, it would give you a distance bar both at Comand and you cluster display (you should have the cluster navi menu selected if you need all the details).

Are you sure the car does not have any Video In Motion CAN bus filters, it would make the approach to the turn inaccurate in many cases and the advice could come too late or too early, I assume this is not the case.

I beleive only the 2010 model pronounces street names.
2009 and earlier only mention the name if it is a highway number. Similarly, freeway off ramps are only named by number.

Information for turning is given well in advance. There is usually a warning to prepare to turn right or left. In addition, often you will see an indication along the bottom of the display (and also in the speedometer if nav mode is selected) which shows which lanes you should be in.

Assuming you vehicle is a 2009, it most likely has the latest firmware update.
An indication that it does is if the radio volume fades down while navigation announcements are being made. It should also have real time traffic information displayed (if you live in a major city where the information is available)
