Bad S-Class Feature

All of you know that any person can walk over to your turned off and secured w221 S Class mercedes and pull the door handle and the vehicle will immediately tell that person what the mileage is on your vehicle.

That to me is a personal matter that shouldn't be displayed randomly.

Bad, Bad

Or they can just read the VIN from the windshield and run a much more detailed report. But wait, that's with any car, not just the W221. Seriously, who cares? I'm proud to show my 5100 miles!

If I catch someone writing down my VIN number, you'll read about it on CNN.

You mean CNN would write about it but who would really read it?

What do you actually mean with this, I can tell 11 out of 17 of your VIN digits by just looking at your car from distance.

Does the car switch instrument cluster on if you don't have the key in your pocket? Mine does not have KG and it does not react at all if I pull the handle when the car is locked.

I have the keyless Go, and it looks for a key with every touch.

Are you ****ing kidding me? For oh, I dunno, 50 years, just about every car had a mechanical odometer which you could read plain as day.

Who gives a **** what your mileage is? Do you think anybody who is just randomly pulling on car door handles cares what the mileage is? They are A) probably a junkie looking for an easy boost or b) a child.

Also, cut the tough guy bull****. So a guy writes down your vin, with which he can do very little, and you're going to produce a CNN worthy event?

I think you need to calm the hell down guy.

I know that, but did you try to pull the door handle without the car key in your pocket? After all, the one passing by and lurking for odometer readings would unlikely have the key for your car.

Should we continue to monitor CNN for related news?

@deiesel, thanks for being a good mbworld member. Some guy with no key told me at the gym that he like my car and that he just stood next to it without a key and that it read, "Don't forget your key" and the miles.

I can't start the car from 10ft away and through wood wall

you don't catch on so quick. Prior to 2000, it was very common for cars to have mechanical odos...going back to what, the 20s? Imagine, 80 years of somebody looking at your mileage.

Sure, give me your number and I'll give you a call...we can discuss mileage, name changing, and how you're gonna come kick my ***...just don't do it in your s-class, I may catch a glimpse of your mileage.

it is not uncommon in europe to have a full operational lease where gas is included with your lease payment. In these cases, you get a special gas card to "pay" for gas. You need to enter your mileage at the point of sale each time you gas up. I sometimes forget to memorize the mileage before turning off my car, which is a hassle because I need to start the engine again to see it. The feature discussed would be great over here.

What the car is telling you is "Key Not Recognized" The fact that the milage is there is secondary and cant possibly be of any use to anyone...

Sometimes I grab my wife's key fob which is identical to mine and its nice to know that right away rather then thinking the battery is dead (which also happened to me once).

There is always great stuff here on the forums but every now and again people latch on to the dumbest things!

Embrace your high milage Mercs!! I love my 60,000 miles and counting! No need to be embarrassed about your milage, nor is it secret information or anything that can be used against you. Worse things can be done with your license plate number!

Is this post a joke? I have a complaint too. When I get in my car there are these buttons that move the windows up and down. What kind of feature is this? If the window is down anyone can look inside my car. Mercedes should fix this immediately.

I'm pretty sure that my car doesn't do this. Maybe they "fixed it" for 2010+ models?

I'm not concerned with "people seeing the mileage", as much as I think it's a bad feature since if someone repeatedly pulled the handle (in theory), constantly triggering the battery to power the I/C screen can drain the battery (again, in theory).

you can listen to the radio for hours with just the battery, how long do you propose it would take the little screen to kill the battery?
