Seems like a lot of you have access to manhiem, I'm looking at some 07/08 S550 and the dealers are throwing all kinds of numbers at me. I would like to be a little educated to throw numbers back w/o insulting them or killing myself.

but I was just wondering what Manhiem is? I searched on Google and can't seem to figure out what they really do. I'm about to get a new S550 within the month and I too, like Dannieboiz and the rest of the forum, would prefer NOT to be ripped off, especially considering how the car is already 110 grand!

 

It's an auto auction that a lot of license dealer including Mercedes go to to buy and sell their cars. As a lot has mentioned, it's a hit and miss, and there are risks. From what I've seen from you on the other post, it's not something for you.

 

My next door neighbor at the office is a leasing company. He uses Manheim for everything. For instance, when he need to put a price on a used car or trade-in, he'll check Manheim and see the auction values, complete with mileage and color combos. Or, if a customer wants a certain car, he'll go there to establish a price range. He won't necessarily BUY the car from Manheim, but it is a useful research tool.

Dannieboyz: The first thing you need to know is how the dealer will react to you if you throw a Manheim number at them. They'll say, "Well, we don't know anything about the condition of the Manheim car, or how it is equipped. But, we have a real cherry of a car here on our lot, one-owner sweet old lady only drove it to church....." etc etc etc. It's the truth, it has happened to me (trade-in and used-car purchase). PS: If you already have the white '08 S550, why are you looking at another 07/08? For someone else???

To answer the original question:
With a small list of colors and mileage, perhaps you could ask your leasing friend what the recent Manheim numbers are? Then the member could use this information judiciously?

I add such things as the CPO process and any extended services to the financial evaluation of a particular car and subsequent offer. I would also ask for the service history of the car from the selling MB dealer.

Annualize a 5% net profit on a $70k car that is turned over in a month. This is a lucrative business situation. Why shouldn't a consumer have the industry information?

 

Manheim MMR will not tell you everything; while it tells you color, mileage, location and transaction price, it does not tell you what options the car is equipped with. For the most part, you could tell the higher priced ones are cars in a desirable color with an AMG sport package and a pano roof (or rear seat pkg), but for the same mileage, differences in equipment and color can vary the final sell price of a car by quite a bit.

 

If you look at the original post date, it's over a month old and the thread was brought back. I have since purchased a car from an indie dealer. I found a broker that was working on auctioning one for me but I lost patience and found a car from an indie for just a little bit more than what similar cars at the auction were going for. If you have patience, you can most likely get a good deal from one of the broker. Paying $500-$750 over dealer invoice is always nice.

I am looking for S550 also with sport package 2007. I will pay under or close to $35000 out the door with all taxes and fees. I am closed but not there yet on price. May be before Christmas.

 

Some real SL 55 bargains, perhaps? Guess you have to be there.

What do the R, V and so after the model number stand for?

 

That's like asking to get the car for $ 31k. That's doable with something 65k+ miles You gotta consider the P1,p2,p3 package too. Anything under 40k miles expect to pay around 43-50k + reg. If you're not picky in color combination you can do it quick, if you wanna get specific be prepare to pay a premium

I'm not sure about all of the lettering, but I do know for sure that the 'V' after the S550 indicates it's the 'long wheelbase' version, which from my understanding is the only one sold in the US anyways. So even the ones without the 'V' are still indeed the long version.

 

Sounds like Thomas Pynchon came up with that one.

Yes, I am not to picky with colors and option. As long as it has AMG package and 2007 S550, I will be fine. Also I am looking for high mileage S550. Any thing between 60,000 to 75,000 miles will be fine. I have been bless with used MB in past, never had any major issues with MB Cars. Also thanks to mbworld and Benzworld community, I do many DIY which has saved me many $$$$$.

Right now due to crappy economy, for some reason used car are holding prices good. 4 or 5 years ago newly used MB of the lease return at auction used to go for much lesser amount. But now these used MB's in 2011 are holding pricing pretty good.

 

Now a days all kind of MB DEALER comes to these auction to buy cars. It is getting harder to beat these stealer at these High Line Auctions.
