I just got a 2008 W221 S65 (had an 07 S550)- and the birds eye nav has a weird quirk I am not sure if is supposed to be this way:

When in birds-eye view, the display has a blank blue band running across the top. Doesn't exist in overhead view, or anywhere else.

Is this typical?

Yes it is. In bird's eye view, your viewing perspective is on an angle which means the blue band on the top of the screen is actually the horizon.
