Looks good but I like the current version better, especially the huge rear fenders when compared to the subtle ones on this image. That one won't really make ours look too outdated though which will be a good thing. Actually, those lines on the side remind me of a 1 or 3 series bmw, don't think it really fits for the S

Possibly. If the new CLS is any indication, then maybe thisis how they plan to do the S. If this is true, then I would say the new model seems more 'evolutionary' as opposed to 'revolutionary.'

It looks more C-class than S class from the front. Of course a picture won't tell anything.

if you look at the other renderings that autobild came up with, they correctly guessed the CLS back in 2008

CLS
rendering

but even with this one, I am sure Mercedes will not let down. I don't think they have a current model which I do not like. All their cars grow on you

I like what I see. More sporty with elegance.
The picture above doesn't compare with this one (camera angle etc.)

Here is another rendering by someone else. They all seem to stick to the current lines and design. They must be on to something.

I've heard that Mercedes has shown renderings of the car to interested customers already.

Those awful side ridges already look like ding magnets. Whenever a manufacturer gets a car just right, they always feel like they need to "improve" it on the next restyle; they typically screw it up for at least one generation as the result.

I have faith in Mercedes to deliver with this one. They never let down, and the S-Class is always their best car

Exactly! Those rendering pictures always look like crap. The entire MB lineup just gets better and better. Everytime the new one comes out it makes you want to get rid of the one you have. I guess that's the whole point of what they are trying to do.

I can't wait for the next S.

they are the benchmark for luxury sedan. However you're right, their models always grow one you. When the E-Class and CLS came out i wasn't a fan, but now I think both cars look great.

Even before I picked up my current S-Class I thought it looked weird, but now I love it.

That was not the case at all when W140 was replaced with W220.

I doubt the car will end up looking *exactly* like these images....it will probably be similar and at least look better and more refined (hopefully a lot) than these renderings, but as we know it will include the current design language that's been popping up in MBs recently, so I'd also agree that these are probably close.

I have to say, those of us that got a good deal on a W221 in the last couple years, coupled with the record used market recently, are in the reverse situation of the W220, which suffered from a lackluster reputation and tanking desirability and value, sandwiched between 2 models thought of as top efforts from Mercedes.

They always come in pairs....W126 was a tweaked W116, followed by the radically changed W140, which was succeeded as a downsized and rounded (but unfortunately crappier) version in the W220, before yielding to the all-new W221. Now we have its tweaked version coming. Even the naming scheme, W222, is evolutionary.

That's not to say it won't have potential to be one kickass car (especially with the new "Magic" widgets), but our W221s are not going to be mistaken for yesteryear's models anytime soon in most people's eyes.

I would say that it will look 90% like this, maybe a few more lines here and there

however I have to agree, the W221 will def not look outdated. They still look better than the current 7 series and A8 in my opinion.

Agreed....This current crop will have the most commonality among Mercedes styling in a long time, but still not to the extent of BMW and especially Audi, which makes their top models suffer, in my opinion.

I guess the manufacturer has no choice, the new model must look different from the old one. Otherwise nobody would buy the new one even if it was different inside (exaggerated).

Different buyers have different taste, usually US buyers have a very different taste from European buyers but I feel this difference has been reducing significantly lately.

Personally I feel the models shown at this thread are going to the W212 direction (after the W211). Generally sharper lines compared to the previous model. One gets used to the new looks like the W212 but I still feel the W211 looks better than the 212, or the 210. Hopefully the 222 eventually improves more from the 221 compared to the 212 after the 211.

I have not followed BMW much but the 5-series used to have very sharp lines and a box like body but now they have changed back to smoother lines while not going too far there. Almost looks like MB is one generation off from the BMW changes (could be one generation ahead or behind).

Then again, I don't care much how the car looks, specifically from outside. I mostly see the inside and the invisible part of the car is even more important. There still is a chance to combine good looks with good features, so why not...

I'm not a great fan of the side ridges. It's the same with the new CLS the ridge has spoilt the flow of the car, not impressed.

2011 e350 bluetec
WOW, I posted a thread asking about this and here it is.

I am torn, as I have a US 2012 S350 on order, and love my E350 bluetec !!

It is c class in the front, with a Audi LED's the new CLS sides, and well the rear has a CLS trunk and Bentley Mulsanne "esk" lights stretched out. More modern, and it has that EDGE that MB has been looking for. The first CLS was a good start to find out what the market wants and sales show a full size CLS with seating for 5 is the direction the customers are looking for. It will grow on you for sure but I’d say until the auto show, this is a great foreshadow of what we might see in a few months.
