Difference between CDI and blutec...

What is the difference between these two? Are these both diesel?

I had a 2008 GL CDI diesel with a spare tire. The Bluetec diesel version came out the next year, with an Ad-blue tank, for emission controls, filling the spare tire well. Other than that, not much else different.
