Black Comand Screen
Totally bizare. Just noticed it on getting back into car. Was fine 2 hours back.
Started the car up, then saw something that looked like 4 blank spaces on the instrument cluster like to enter a code or whatever, which I just bypassed using the buttons on the wheel. Never seen that before. Anyway the comand screen just went black after.
Thing is, all the buttons on the centre console work as do all the buttons on the wheel. Has the Comand LCD screen switched of or something? Tried pressing the ON button on the console a few times but nothing.
Any ideas? Thanks.

The four blank spaces (if that is what you call them) mean that the cluster had no contact to the Comand unit via the CAN bus. Have you checked the fuses? Could also be a loose connector as well as a broken display or Comand unit etc.

FIXED !!!!
Checked the fuses and there was a 5 Amp fuse blown as show in the second picture. Changed it and the Comand screen just came back upon start-up.
Here's the Fuse Box in the Engine Bay in front of the Steering wheel.
Here's a close up of the 5 Amp fuse, top left of the picture and number 51 on the circuit.
Just have to figure out why this happened at all. But many thanks for your advice.

TOTALLY BAFFLED: After reading this thread and having a w221 with a black command screen, I looked at fuse 51 and it was not there! Nothing in that location.
I did not have a 5 amp fuse but I had a 3 amp. Plugged it in and I have full function again.
I have been having serious audio issues for some months but the black screen was something new three days ago.
HOW IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE?
Update: Inserting fuse led to improper conclusion. Full function lasted until the car was shut off and restarted. Problems persist :-( So Sad.

F51 up to 5/31/09 production, need to have someone pull fault codes using MB diagnostics.
