Should the dealer be charging me for this service. I'm scheduled to bring it in soon and they want $150. I've heard from other threads that some people are getting this done for free?

When I asked during a Service "A" the SA stated that software updates are not part of the warranty work even though my car was CPO. The SA was familiar with the upgrade so he did include it with the service (helped that a forum member took his time and educated the SA months prior - thanks Henry)
From past threads, $150 is about the norm, good luck. And if you proceed make sure the AC works afterwards. The tech skipped a step during the upgrade & needed to make another trip back there

Definitely not the latest but I'm pretty sure 3D comes even with the very first maps. It is features like traffic (in the US) that comes with a map update but even there an update from the original US MY2007 release. Traffic needs both updates.

So just got back from the dealer. They tell me to be weary of doing the telematics update bc it might have conflicts with various parts of the vehicle. He said although most updates go off without a hitch, he has seen cases where the telematics doesnt "agree" with some of the vehicles "parts" and shuts that part down until further serviced. Told me I should weigh my options. What gives? Wasted my whole day waiting on this just to be intimidated. Does anyone know what he is taking about? What ALL does this update do besides birds view and video?

That may be your car, you must have one with personal SW from MB. Sorry but there is no technical explanation for that behaviour. I had one of the very early Maps data (not exactly the earliest but from the time before cars came with bird's eye view) and got that before updating maps (and I had the same SW from MB as everyone else, except one).

I think you were referring to the AC problem. There are other issues that may appear unless version coding is done properly after the telematics update. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why dealers don't want to do it. It takes a long time and the customer should bring a pile of documents explaining which parameters have to be checked.
