WTB: Rotors and Pads

Would you recommend going with stock pads and rotors or with aftermarket? If yes, what company?

Is anyone here selling S550 OEM rotors and pads? Preferably new or like new.

Stock pads are terrible IMO. I switched to Akebono ceramic performance pads and they are fantastic! No brake dust even after a week or more of driving and the rotors are smooth like a mirror. Even on the SL which as 8 piston calipers.
Wheels now stay cleaner than the car

Stopping power appears to be the same as stock.

Re. the rotors, I have used MB stock rotors (which are quite cheap or Brembo's)

I have garden variety, 2007 4-Matic. I, too, tired of my non-stock chrome wheels getting caked w/ brake dust. I went w/ Akebono ceramic, as well. Wheel dust/residue was really, really reduced. Not a cowboy driver, I found zero change going to ceramic.

Rotors....I researched and found dollar/quality, imo, the coated Zimmerman rotors were first choice.

Out of warranty, my indi mechanic said just go buy what you want, he simply charged for installation.

Good luck.

Thank you for you suggestions. Brake dust on stock pads is pretty bad. I will look into Akebono ceramic performance pads.

Zimmerman rotors do they perform as well as stock? are they much more expensive?

+1 For Akebono Ceramic brake pads and Zimmermann Coat Z rotors, which perform just as well, if not better than the OEM rotors. Pricewise, the Zimmermann rotors are cheaper than OEM.

Zim rotors and ceramic Akebono's haven't a discernable increase in "shriek, screeech or noise pitch", imo. 'Course, I am old and hearing is kaput...j.

Really, I like my combo. Biased, but I researched like hell. Others, I am sure, are equal, worse or better. But, I am happy.

Good luck.

As Em Bee Lover noted, no noise noted with the combination mentioned above.

looks like i'll have to do my front rotors and pads in the spring. I have also been thinking if i should go with Akebono's or do an upgrade.
from what i've been able to learn, e55 front rotors and calipers should bolt on, in the back euro s600, unfortunately not available in US. anyone knows any other combos that may bolt on as well?
thanks

FYI

I agree with the combination suggested + a bit of needed safety inspection/maintenance.

Excess brake dust on front wheels may indicate one or more of the REAR caliper pistons are seized in the caliper bore.
Any excess resistance pressing the caliper piston into the bore is a symptom of brake issues.
Odd wear of brake pads = a single or pair of pads thicker/thinner than others on the car.
Black brake fluid, could be maintenance or cooked fluid from a dragging caliper.
Difficulty bleeding, could be bad master cylinder, hoses, and/or calipers.

Visual inspection of brake hoses is 99% useless.
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/...1999-c280.html

The issue is INTERNAL hose lining...
FYI: Stainless braided brake hoses are pretty, but have the same basic life cycle as stock.

Brake:
Some Facts About Brake Hoses:
#1. The industry standard average safety life of a brake hose is six years. FYI data SAE: J1401, J1703, J1705, J1873, J1406, J1288, J1403, J1833, J1402.
#2. Brake hoses deteriorate from the inside as well as the outside.
#3. Moisture is absorbed into brake fluid systems through brake hoses.
#4. Contaminants in brake fluid act abrasively on the inner wall of brake hoses.
#5. The brake hose reinforcing fabric deteriorates through expansion and moisture.
#6. High operating temperatures contribute to the deterioration of hoses.
#7. Brake hoses swell with age and restrict flow.
#8. Generally all brake hoses on a vehicle deteriorate at the same rate, So all hoses should be replaced if one is found to be faulty!

Brake hose failure mode:

#A. Rupture (burst hose) = age, exercise (too many miles) or impact are the typical cause.

*B. Partial internal collapse = the inner ply becomes damaged/detached acting as a partial restriction and/or one way valve.

#C. Full internal Blockage = the inner ply becomes damaged/detached acting as a plug = brake pedal still feels good but there is no brake application.
