I'm planning on ordering Akebono front pads for my 2010 S550. Should I buy sensors also?

Thanks!

I would. They dont cost much and while its apart just slip it in.. One on front and one on the rear.

If the check brakes light/wear indicator came on, you must. If that wasn't triggered, technically you don't. I had same situation last fall.

But, as said, they are reasonably cheap (about the only thing mechanical on these beasts that is) and when apart, why not do it? Just my opinion.

For what it's worth....I did Zimmermann rotors on front and Akebono pads. Great dust reduction compared to oem's. Can't sense any stopping performance change.

Hi guys,

While this thread is open...i'm looking for rotors that don't rust in the middle part that have some coating... I hate it when the rotors on that part rust (not the contact surface where the pad meets the rotor). Can you advise or the r1's and/or the zimmerman rotors are coated and last?

Thanks!

But throughout the change I reused the sensor with no issues. As long as they didn't trigger.

Ill agree with this statement, I've installed Akebono to get rid of dust on my old CLK and had to press the pedal twice as hard, after a a few hundred miles it got better, but i think the breaking performance was somewhat reduced permanently. I've switched back after a few thousand miles as well.

Replacing brake sensor

My dealer wanted $300 just for front pads so I bought pads and took it to our local mechanic. The brake sensor was not replaced by him, so I bought a sensor and took out the old one and put it in the little hole on the side after the new pads were installed. But the brake pad message is still on my dashboard.
The old sensor looks exactly like the new sensor, no wear on it. So....
Did I do this correctly? Maybe the rear pad sensor is keeping the message on?

I should have just paid the $300 and been through with it.

Thank for an help in advance.

Look up or search on Sponsor RacingBrake on the ML63, CLK forums. I've used their product since 95 on various cars and it is stellar. The RBs on the 95 Legend are still in service! RB may have a fitment for you.

Two points.....

Rusting middles. I have six months on Zimmermann coated. Driven in Wisconsin snow and salt. Middles are as grey as original; no rust. So far, at least.

DREWSCUE--sensors. Was the code showing and then pads were replaced? Did your independent reset the computer to clear the sensor fault? To my experience, just replacing a part won't dump the fault code. If the fault code wasn't showing on your panel, I would check their connection. Just a thought and possibility, as to why it's still there after you put new ones in.

Good luck.

Replacing brake sensor

Em Bee, sorry, I am in the wrong class....I'm C class.

I get messages in the middle of my speedometer cluster saying A3 due, taillights out, etc. One of the messages is check brake pad wear and it was on before the pads were replaced. I saw where you could reset for A/B service, etc on another thread (by pressing different buttons on steering wheel), but not brake pad message. Thought it could only be reset by replacing the sensor, even by my independent.

A generic question, does a new sensor look any different from an old sensor? Mine looked exactly alike. The one I replaced went in the middle of pads in an opposite direction, so I don't see how the sensor could wear down with the pads. Or does it even wear down? I'll check the connections and repost on C class thread unless I resolve here.

Thanks for your time!

Sorry Em Bee, I just checked and the connection was loose! I bet it was when I tried to put the tire back on and hit it (wish these cars had bolts that stick out and hold your tire on).

Okay, problem solved......thanx again!
