Take it to the dealer, as soon as you can before you damage the transmission.
The noise is NOT normal at all.
Happened to me once (previous benz) while the car was still in motion, minimal motion, just before the stop and I put the lever in park position.

I just hear a scraping , rasping sound for about 1 second when I put it in park . Otherwise all seems normal. I have 1 month and 2000 miles left of the factory warrantee.. If its normal I will probly disregard, if not I am gonna get it in to the dealer. I dont like to bother them if its normal..

Make sure you guys aren't confusing the normal noise it makes when shifting gears for a mechanical issue.
If the grinding type of noise is very quick, sort of high pitched, and does it every time you shift from any gear to any gear, it's normal.

I have a "noise" when I first put the car in gear as well. It sounds like when you barely release the brake and let the car move an inch or two- and the rotors make that rubbing/grinding noise. The tranny noise last for half a second and is not very loud. I only noticed it at first b/c my E did not make it. I no longer notice it, in fact I just had to go out to my car to confirm it still did it. I test drove several S's and they all had the same noise. The dealer said it was normal and showed me a brand new '10 that did the same thing. I would say it is normal, but for piece if mind I would go to the dealer to confirm it.

If it is a "scraping" noise, it is normal. With these electronic transmissions, they work with actuators and you are hearing the actuator working. Unless it is something I have not heard before, then you should be fine. Example, had a customer with a new to them GL. 2nd day of ownership they called in to say the tranny was making a "weird, scraping" noise. Told them it was normal, but to bring it in anyways. Service advisor heard it and said the same thing, just normal.

Ok, I have a question. When driving at non aggressive speeds, right before the transmission shifts, I get this vibration like the torque of the engine has worn out the enginee or transmission mounts. Is anyone else having this problem or is this a common problem?
Just got the C service message and was NOT going to take it in since I just did the B service 5k ago and know I don't need to have the same things check again except to have this potention problem checked and replace the brack fluid. (I have 62k on the car).

Thanks Drexelm for reviving this old thread, as I was wondering too and about to ask the dealer about this particular noise ,but from what I have read now ,guess its normal..
But no, not normal to have excessive vibration at shifts, but seems to be a common issue to have bad engine and or tranny mounts over the years with these beasts..
As for the service :hopefully another member rings in ..but my guess it needs to be done whatever ..but cannot verify what a C-service comprises as I am away for a while with no acces to home computer etc.

Thanks for the reply. I found several other threads on some sites that confirm that the mounts sitting correctly in the boot is an issue.
I am going to have it looked at as well as standard oil change. C service is Oil change and a bunch of inspections (almost the same ones as B service).
I only the drive the car on weekends or when my the Stretch as my daughter calls it (LS400) is down for maintenance.
thanks for the info.
