2007 S550 New Owner Questions

Whats up everybody. I'm working on purchasing an 07 s550 from a dealer in another state so I haven't physically seen the car yet. I know the car does not have bluetooth or Satalite radio and from what Ive read on the forums that the earlier models didn't come with those hookups. Is this true or is there a way around it? Is there any build date that will indicate if this car has the capabilities?

Also how is the reliability? This car has really low miles and comes with every service record, as well as a clean bill of health from the MB dealer that's selling it. I previously owned a Lincoln Navigator that was also the 1st year of its generation and i would run into all kinds of stupid problems that only happened in that specific year.

Its my first MB so I dont know what to expect

Thanks for the Help.

I'm not sure about the bluetooth, maybe someone else can help on that. I think it may have it though but i'm not sure.

What I would suggest is that you get a warranty from the dealer, these cars are very expensive to fix. Make sure that the car doesn't have the balance shaft gear issue. You'll need to get the engine serial number to see if it does.

Welcome...

Get one with a warranty certified pre owned if possible. If they break it can get expensive..I got a CPO from mercedes with 40K but there were some issues. The warranty saved me alot of money.

Here is your answer to bluetooth:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-MERCEDES-W221-S350-S550-S600-S63-S65-BLUETOOTH-MODULE-CRADLE-ADAPTER-04-09-/121149790029?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c3517174d&vxp=mtr
You can get them for like $150 or less. I picked up one for a friend for $80 on ebay.

My 07 came with SAT radio.

Expect to have some cash reserve to fix the car for any unforseen issues if it's not covered..read up on the forums here and you will get an idea on what to expect..

Good luck

Thanks for the info. I really wasn't in the market for a car that old but I found one for 29,900 with 25k miles. Comes with full service records and clean vin. I'm still up in the air about the warranty stuff since I'm still in talks with the dealer. I've had a few friends and clients with the 550 and I've yet to hear anything bad. I'm a private label wheel designer so the car is mostly for meetings and displaying wheels n such so it really won't see a lot of road time. I have confirmed the car has the iPod hookup as well as the setup for the bt. The car doesn't have the antenna on the trunk so I don't believe it has Sirius.

I've got quite a bit of automotive contacts in south Florida so even if I don't end up with a warranty then I should be able not to get completely raped.

But then again I've never had an Mb

Only the very early vehicles had two antennas, one on the trunk and one on the roof. Most of the 2007 vehicles had only a single dual purpose antenna. If you get the VIN number, there are members of this forum who can use it to get a full list of all factory installed options that the vehicle has. Send a PM to member konigstiger with the VIN number and ask him to get the vehicle equipment list for you. He may also be able to give you a detailed list of any significant service campaigns that are applicable to this vehicle

There is one upgrade you might request from the dealer which they could do for little or no cost. They just have to connect the vehicle to a diagnostic/test computer and let it run for a few hours. This is to have the latest firmware installed in the vehicle. The later firmware which came into existence initially at the end of 2008 added some new features. Among them is the display of real time traffic on the GPS display. This works through data transmitted on FM radio and is provided lifetime for free (dos not involve satellite radio). Newer models get the traffic data via Sirius and require a special paid subscription for traffic data. Traffic data is only available in major cities. See http://www.navteq.com/rdstraffic/ for the parts of the country where traffic data is available. The firmware upgrade also enables viewing of DVD video while vehicle is not in motion. Look at the topic at the top of this forum entitled "MBUSA W221 Bulletins to date" and find the ones associated with updating "command" firmware. If these have been done you will have the latest. Several dealers will refuse to install the newer firmware unless the vehicle exhibits any of the symptoms described in the bulletins. Most are unaware that installing the newer firmware to resolve minor problems also adds the new features.

One final caution-- It is important that the transmission be serviced at 39,000 or 40,000 miles. This consists of total replacement of the fluid and filters.

Thanks. ill forward that info to him. The dealer has been pretty good about all my requests so i will have them check into the whole firmware thing. The dealer sent me a breakdown for the vehicles options and there was only really, Savanna/cashmere premium leather seats (1300) Parktronic (650) and wood grain wheel (550)

Does the factory bt stream audio or does it only do the phone system?

Also is the trans flush at 40k part of a service interval or just something that's preventative? What type of pricing am I looking at?

Factory blue tooth is for telephone audio only. In order for this to work, an optional "puck" must be installed in the center console glove box. This is normally installed by the user, it simply plugs in. Find out if your vehicle contains a puck. Do a Google search for "Mercedes puck". You will find both OEM parts as well as others.

There was a dealer installed option for an IPOD in the dash glove box. This allows control of an IPOD from the steering wheel. This could be added, but there is some labor involved. Keep in mind that you can get a lot of music on six DVDs especially if you use double sided ones.

The transmission service is preventative maintenance. Depending on where you live, the cost at a dealer could range from $300 to possibly $500 or more.

The car does have the puck and it does have rediculously short ipod cable in the glove box. It looks like the module connection is inside the dash instead of that large plug in the glove box so i assume its a very early style unit. Ive seen some kinda module that will allow Bluetooth streaming but it looks like its mostly for earlier models. its seems like its just going to be a pain in the *** to get a decent aux and Bluetooth and Sirius in this car.

Almost makes me want to cut the deal wait for another newer cherry car to come by.

Mercedes does offer a Bluetooth streaming adapter BUT it is only compatible with 2010 or newer S class vehicles. There are some aftermarket devices that might work.
It is likely connector in the glove box is NOT compatible with the latest Apple products. There are inexpensive adapter available to take care of this.

One caution about Bluetooth audio streaming-- It will never sound as good as a hardwired connection due to its limited bandwidth. You will not achieve the full audio sound fidelity of the vehicle.

The Bluetooth puck is installed in the front of the armrest glove box. If you are told it is somewhere else, you can't be looking at a S550. The vehicles produced for the last couple of years do not use the puck, Bluetooth is built in.

The price for this vehicle might reflect the fact that it has very few options making it less desirable.

Ive seen the phone adapter in the front console and it seems like the BT Module just plugs in. The lack of options does make the deal not look so sweet since im paying almost 30k for a car that doesn't have options that come with most entry level cars these days. The mileage, price and service history are what is the most enticing about the car.

The Bluetooth would be more for steaming audio. I know it diminishes sound quality but every S class I have encountered has had that short cable in the glove box and I constantly have my phone in my hand.

Im having the car visually confirmed today so if it looks and drives good then ill take the flight to go pick it up

If you have an iPod connection in the car this works great for streaming audio :

Id like to thank everyone for the info and input. I just got back in from picking up the S in New Orleans. The car looks and feels damn near brand new but there are still some things that kinda worry me every time I read the forums, but I will deal with them as they come. The only issue that I have had is i sometimes dont hold the shifter long enough when i go into reverse and then it wont let me go into reverse from neutral. Also I need to get used to the transmission. To me it feels funny but im used to normal 4 speed transmissions in standard cars, even the 6speed in my Lexus threw me off at first. I picked up the car at an MB dealer so I have all the records and the service is up to date but I will end up buying a 3rd party warranty. Ive never owned an MB so im sure i will be asking alot of dumb questions

Congratulations on the purchase. Find a good indy MB specialist in your local area. Regular maintenance will serve you well. I have owned many MB over the past 15 years and have them maintained them to the T. Never ever I had any major headaches or night mares.

Just an FYI, one of my friend drives 07 S550 as a limo and he has over 190k miles on it. Interior/exterior looks excellent. The major out of pocket expense he had was to change two from airmatic shocks. But other than that he had done regular upkeep.
