Are you referring to http://www.mbgtc.de ? They do recycle parts but they say that 80% of the parts come from their development departments and their own fleet.
I have bought a few parts from them.

Hi- Just reviewing this as this just happened to me. I have an '09 S550 4MATIC. All of COMMAND System working except Navigation. I bought a disc update from MBUSA but it would not load/update. It seems from the thread that two methods have worked: a) do nothing, it suddenly stared to work again, and b) replace the HDD.
Three questions: 1) Any thoughts on what would cause NAV to fail and then start working again. 2) Any new information or progress on diagnosing/repairing the problem? 3) Any info on how common/widespread the problem is?

Where is the HU hard disk drive located?
The HDD in these HU is normally a Hitachi 20GB. I used the Samsung 30GB HDD for a while. Now when I repair these units I use an IDE to CF adaptor and fit a 32GB compact flash card. I clone a working HDD and no more problems. The HU reads navigation and other functions much quicker. With most navigation faults the HDD is the problem.

What kind of solid state drive and interface did you use? Most SSD's are SATA, did you use some kind of converter or did you use PATA SSD?

I have a ready to go Toshiba, 20Gb, model # MK2028GAC, Navigation system Hard Disk Drive (HDD) with all the original maps (latest map command update 2015/2016 NTG3 v15.0 US version installed) software and other configuration settings on it. This HDD is a direct fitment for 2007-2009 Mercedes S550. If your navigation HDD is dead or is dying, privately message (PM) me if you are interested in buying my hard drive. This is a rare item and troubleshooting/replacement at the MBZ dealership can be very expensive. Just so that you know if your HDD dies it not only affects the navigation system but also causes problem with the climate control settings and other features managed by the Command Unit.

Will be doing this fix Friday, adapter and 32GB mSATA drive ordered. My Navi is in the " software was updated and to insert the map DVD " mode, so I'll be trying the replace/recreate method. Will reply with the cheesy goodness and process I followed if different from yours. Thanks for your efforts!

- Original Toshiba HDD replaced with 32GB mSata connected via the Ableconn IIDE-MSAT mSATA SSD to 2.5-Inch IDE Adapter Converter
- Attempted load of Update 15 DVD Maps, this time instead of the standard "software was updated and to insert the map DVD" message persisting, I got a confirmation that the v15 DVD was the one I wanted to load.
- Still failed after attempting the load.
Next steps;
- Attempt to recover the QNX4 data from the original drive, at least the partition structure
- Attempt to load the original map set from SDS (perhaps the update DVD is just for updates?)
So it looks like just loading from a blank drive is not an option, unless it will work from SDS.

I made a copy of the original drive when I installed the ssd. It was after installing the latest firmware via SDS. If you need it, hit me up via pm.

I have same problem with NAVI maps and I reckon problem is the Hard drive . However I am worried that the Hard Drive in the car may contain some piece of code to match it to the VIN of the car or something like that . i.e. not just the maps . If I replace the entire Head Unit assembly with a second hand one I purchased I do not have the ' anti theft code ' for the radio end.

I don't think the older NTG3 has anti theft... might
anti theft in radios has only ever inconvenienced the owner or the garage working on legitimate cars - the whole idea is ridiculous
there is going to to be basic coding set up for the seats, massage, heater, not sure if that's on a chip of part of the stuff on the hard-drive
but we have a member who can help out and do stuff with dealer tools if you join his club....
