How can I check the transmission fluid level on my 2007 s550. I cant seem to find the dip stick.
When ever im driving and traveling about 20 mph and up, I feel some slippage when trying to give it some more gas. If I get my foot in it I can feel it struggling to catch. This is the only issue I been having and im hoping it can be solved by topping off the fluid. But first things first. How do I check the fluid level? Please help.

There is no dipstick on the 7 speed transmissions . Fluid level is checked and temp is checked through a scanner

On my 07 550 it is checked by removing the drain plug and see if excess comes out. If not it is low.. There is a plastic tube about 2 inches or so tall that is snapped over the drain in the pan. When full, excess will spill over the tube and out the drain plug and this is done at the certain temp. specified in the procedure. Adding fluid it must be pumped into the drain plug.

Can you specify this procedure. I assume the drain plug is located at the bottom of the trans. Wouldn't removing the drain plug cause the fluid to drain out? Or Is this drain plug located at the top part viewable though the engine bay?

Has anyone encountered my problem? Or does anyone have any input on what might be happening with my trans?

no no.

the 722.9 has an asinine fluid procedure.

there is a standpipe around the drain hole (bottom of the pan) so that unless its overfilled, no fluid will come out. This also permits you to fill it with a pressure source.

ah, hell, just look at this...its a good explanation

Ask what time it is and this link takes you to a procedure as complicated as building a clock. It just aint that difficult!

Well it was a bit overwhelming. But I do appreciate your response. Rather something be overly informative than not. So what do you guys think is going on with my trans?

Here you go.
I went ahead and changed the ATF in my S550. Easy! no big deal. Drained the TC,Yes there is a drain plug on it, got exactly 4 qts out of that. Removed the pan drain plug and got less than a quart. I stuck a 1/4 steel rod into the drain hole and tilted it sideways. The overflow pipe popped off and 3 more quarts drained out.
Took the pan off and cleaned it thoghly, cleaned the 2 magnets, put the plastic overflow pipe back onto the boss on the drain plug. Installed a new gasket and filter. Used 6 new pan bolts.. They are very soft bolts so dont overtighten them. Put it all back together. Took a 12 MM bolt and drilled a 3/16 hole in it. Cut it to 1/2 in long, Brazed a 1/4 in pipe coupling on it. I took the same pump I use to suck the oil out of the engine and pumped 5 qts into the tranny.. started the engine for about 5 sec. Put the rest of the fluid in a quart at a time and ran the engine for 5 sec after each quart until I had all 8 qts pumped into it. Removed my adapter and put the plug back in. 2 hrs and Done... No big deal. I notice the shifting seems much smoother now also.. The old fluid looked like Coke. No junk in the filter but was some metal fuzz on the magnets..

so you don't measure the temp?

Don't check fluid flow?

your car may shift ok, but thats not to say you've serviced it properly.

To measure the temp you can just use a infrared pyrometer from harbor freight. 113F

I do not believe so. The 722.9 transmission is used on the s550s and its sealed

no tranny dipstick or filler tube.

level is checked at specific atf temp (usually obtained via das "transmission service" menu) depending on the tranny pan version. older versions (square pan) require temp to be measured at 43 celsius if i remember correctly, new generation (slanted pan) are checked at 45 celsius.

check is acomplished by removing the drain bolt once the atf is precisely at the prescribed temp. if nothing comes out level is low, if a strong stream comes out it is overfilled. at the right level the stream should be very weak and individual drops should be distinguishable.

there are 3 quarts in oil pan, 2.5 quarts in valve body and roughly 3 quarts in tq converter.

transmission fluid change. 08 e550 BASE
So how do you drain the pan? Do you drop the pan with the fluid in it?

Also do you recommend drain the converter and is this a similar process.

Any info would be great. 1st BENZ and like to do my own work. Ordered 9 qts of fluid along with filter and gasket/copper washer and a plug.

What's the required torque on the 6 pan bolts also.

Can't believe there no dip stick. Saw some type of oval plastic/rubber cover on the bell housing at 1oclock from the rear right under the oil stick. Not sure what this is for. Some type of inspection cover.

Where do you get a good paper shop manual on this car?

Lots of questions. Plan on keeping this car a while. Got 80K on it and dealer maintained (at considerable cost looking at the receipts he gave me). Can't see myself paying for most of what I can do myself.

Thanks for any info.

to drain the pan, you will remove the drain plug and pop off the plastic level tube that is clipped on. This will drain most of the fluid and the rest of the fluid is drained by dropping the pan. Filling the trans requires the car to be level and the temp. is best measured through SDS.
