MY07 COMAND Update

I have been reading on the forum, that in 2008, when the new S class came out, that the dealership was updating the COMAND units to be able to have some of the features of the MY08 such as real-time traffic updates.

I just bought a MY07 S550 and it does not appear to have been updated.

In reading, it is not clear to me what specifically needs to be updated except that it is a "software push". I inquired with the dealer, and they have no idea what I am talking about and said they did not think it was possible.

I thought maybe I just needed to update the NAV-DVD version, so I just bought the 2014 new NAV DVD for MY07-MY09 and it does not seem to give me the updated features.

I also just had the dealer update the car to support mBrace and that did not do anything except allow me to use mBrace.

Any suggestions on how I can direct the dealership to what they need in order to perform the "software push" for the real time traffic updates as well as the DVD video when the parking brake is on?

Thanks for your help, I have searched extensively and have not come up with a firm direction I can give the dealer.

Read the posts on telematics update.. Lot of info and it is very doable. If your dealer doesn't know what a telematics update is have him call his field tech and educate himself.

The newer COMAND (NTG3 which is what yours has) needs to be connected to STAR diagnosis and it needs to be placed in Update mode. The older COMAND units as in the W211 and W220 were just updated using a CD placed in the head unit.

It amazes me how few units are updated from 2007. When browsing online ads for 2007 W221 cars it is very clear when they have not been updated - the COMAND top menu reads Navi Audio Telephone Vehicle. If it has been updated, it will read Navi Audio Telephone Video Vehicle. I don't know why any are running the older software as that should have been performed during one of the first service visits at the dealer.
