Exhaust Note

Hi everyone, I know I'm in the wrong forum section, but one of the members from the CL section said I may have more luck in this section as the car shares some of the same components.......Hope you may be able to help.....

New to this forum after recently selling my RS4 and 911. Just purchased a stunning CL500 09 plate with 40k on the clock from a Mercedes dealer, from what i see it's near on fully loaded and compared to some of the cars i've had before, this one is a dream.....

I only have one very slight issue, the sounds from AMG versions are sublime and if my budget had allowed, the 6.3 would have been my choice, so, not wishing to go aftermarket and move away from a Mercedes product so my warranty remains intact, and wishing to remain 'road legal', what's my best options to gain a more throaty sound more in keeping with the AMG's?

The car does already have factory AMG bodykit and and 20" alloys....

Many thanks for any comments, all the best.M

Welcome. It's a matter of how much money you're willing to spend. You can find a set of AMG mufflers for a couple of grand, or a little less used on Ebay. However as long as you're not deleting the cats I can't envision a warranty scenario going aftermarket. I did a Becker stainless quad axle back exhaust on my CPO S550 for all of the reasons you mentioned. I

t involved swapping out the rear bumper diffuser and some minor surgery to the bumper itself. First impressions was that it was too loud and not keeping with the character of the car (although it's got the AMG package and S63 wheels). We added two in-line mufflers (resonators) and then it was (to my ear) perfect. It growls when pushed and purrs the rest of the time, and you can definitely hear it coming. Probably my 2nd favorite mod after the audio overhaul. The Becker kit was around $700 , a couple hundred for the AMG bumper diffuser and an other buck and a half to the muffler shop.

BTW, your car should be a CL550 if it's 09.

Excellent response Mike, very much appreciated. I shall start looking into getting said mufflers.
Over here in the UK, there are only 500's and 6.3's, the 550's here were the older AMG models, even though engine size wise, your correct, it's 550, weird UK, i know !!

Many thanks, M

i had AMG mufflers (2006 SL55 mufflers) on my non-AMG s550 (2012) before, the result was not so great.
I went ahead and removed the mufflers, and that sounded a lot better, very similar to AMG cars for around $100.

The 2012's got twin turbos, which use the exhaust gasses to drive the impellers, so it's possible that extra resistance results in less exhaust sound to begin with. You would not want straight pipes on a 5.5 NA engine.

I can tell you hands down, the stock exhaust on 10-11, sounds better than 12-13.

And there was me almost thinking a simple fix just by removing mufflers...then Mike makes sense of it....so it's gonna be a costly exercise then......

Thanks all for the input so far.
Cheers
