Tcm or something else?

A friend of mine has an S320 -05 with the 7G tronic transmission.
It has a sudden loss of drive/reverse. He said he stopped it from drive and once he tried to start it wouldn't go anymore.
It revs but no drive.
I used star to read the transmission module, but i found no fault codes and it reads tcm info fine.
Should we suspect tcm failure or something mechanical?
Thanks.

Ok, now i got code 0894 " the gear is implausable or the transmission is slipping", in transmission module.
I suspect this came after i revved the engine several times while on D and R.
I checked every control unit, including airmatic and brakes and found no faults.

My 05 S500 suffered a similar failure and the tranny had self destructed internally. Given the intricacy of that tranny the shop recommended a reman (with a warranty) at $6k vs trying to rebuild mine. A new unit direct from MB was $13k. Didn't want to risk a salvage unit, Good luck.

Ok, thanks for the hint. Someone else also told me these trannies are frequent to break so i think i i will check the oil condition and drop the oil pan to see how the magnet looks like..

Ok, an update. I drained the tranny and oil was grey/black.
After dropping the pan, i noticed magnets were mushy.
So after this i had enough evidence to drop the tranny.
After opening the oil pump end, we noticed oil pump had seized and broken. We are looking into rebuilding it, but for that we need at least the pump/torque converter housing since torque converter bearing had also seized, making the housing unusable.. Anybody can point me where i could get that?

get a salvage yard special whole tranny

i wouldnt muck with a failed tranny as there is junk everywhere inside it now.

also, what made it fail the first time might make it fail again. it might have had slipping clutches due to bad adaptations resulting in gunked oil resulting in seized pump.

dont go down that route. trust me. you dont want to

Something had plugged the filter. I know someone who specializes in rebuilding automatics so we are restoring it. That means also cleaning the internals from gunk.
And my question to you is: what makes you so sure a junker tranny doesn't have same thing waiting to happen down the line..?
In my mind a transmission with new internals is always better than a junker one..

Ok, an update. Transmission was rebuilt and back in the car now and fully working again.
Did reset adaptations just in case, using Star diagnosis.
Thanks for all the help in this issue.
