'08 S450 4Matic
Just purchased

Long time lurker (in the w220 forums as that is what I was going to get), 1st time caller.

I found a 2008 S450 4Matic with 95,000 KM

Options:
- AMG Sport package (wheels and body kit)
- keyless go
- heated rear seats
- rear side sunshades
- will post others as I discover them :-)

Initial thoughts, observations, and surprises:
- By far the best car I've ever driven - much better than a w220 s430 I also looked at.
- unreported and botched paint-job (color is a little off under bright sunlight) on rear quarter.
- looks like the S450 was only offered in Canada (not the US) so it's a little tough to find reviews and articles etc. online.
- keyless go was a surprise I discovered after 5 days of driving the car - found the keyless go button in the ash tray!
- Looks a little smaller than I expected - might be SWB. Will update when I get around to measuring it (or if someone on the forum knows better; or if I park right next to an S550). Also, AMG kit makes it look a little smaller than regular w221s - kind of like an oversized C-class.
- Not as much rear legroom as I expected.
- Still trying to break the habit of looking back at it when walking away in a parking lot

Nice! I'd look back at it too. Never heard of an S450 here in The States. Generally though, unlike most mfrs MB model numbers don't denote trim level. So a 350, 400, 450 and 550 only vary by engine type and size. Also, any S that's not an AMG car can be ordered with any amount of options, including the full leather interior that the S600 gets standard.

If yours is SWB the chunk they took out to shorten it is between the B and C pillars, so that's where the rear legroom went. They do look sportier though than the stretched cars do.

Wow it looks gorgeous man congrats on the purchase! It looks a lot like mine and I think it's the same color. It's a shame here in the US the 550s aren't available with heated rear seats separately. BMWs been doing that for ages on the 7.

Here's another look at an '08. Many improvements over the W 220 with the exception of the infamous 7 speed transmission. Fuel economy is great though, over 30 mpg on the highway with a bigger gas tank that allows about 7oo miles to the tank.

Congratulations! That grey blue silver color is gorgeous in the sun. You made the right decision going for the W221 over the W220.

Thanks! I'm glad I went this route too. It's very feature rich and sure footed.

Great color. I always look at the gray and silver metallic cars and then end up buying a black one and becoming a slave to keeping it clean.

Love the SWB. It needs a set of staggered 20's!

Lol, thanks Mike. These are hard to come by around here, let alone in a choice of colors. This was the only healthy one in my price range within a radius of 3 provinces. Color wasn't much of a factor :-)

re: staggered 20s, I read somewhere that staggered wheels was bad for the 4Matic system?

re: staggered 20s, I read somewhere that staggered wheels was bad for the 4Matic system?
It's not the variation in wheel widths that's the issue, just the potential difference in rolling diameter (wheel + tire), since it can cause the wheel speed sensors to misread two wheels as being overspeed. The AWD system sees this as a traction problem and compensates. The problem is that its supposed to compensate in short bursts as needed, but a rolling diameter mismatch causes it to compensate continuously for no actual slippage and it can damage the system.

However if the rolling diameter difference is under 3%, no problem. As it happens, the stock staggered 20" tire size is under 3%.

If you're considering importing to the US, you will have to have some stuff changed as Canada is on the Metric system. The speedo and odometer are in Klm/hr.

It's believe you can hit a steering wheel button to see a mph readout number, but the speedometer and tach still remain klm/hr.

Yeah the W221 has that option to do off to the left lower side of the speedo. The UOM can also be changed in the setting for the main Speedo. Might be different on his model.
Thanks

Never knew there was a SWB on the W221.
Is that only offered in Canada and not in the states?

The speedo can be changed through the Vehicle settings option in the dash cluster. RPM's are the same in Metric or U.S. 1 rev equals 1 rev.

There's very little difference in the 450 and 550. Primarily it is rear seat space and 4.7 liter engine versus 5.5 liter engines. Fuel economy is superb in the 450 model with 30 MPG not at all unusual, also the large fuel tank (90 liters or approximately 55 U.S. gallons makes a long trip a lot more enjoyable. I have to stop one less time for fuel on the way to Naples Florida.

If someone wanted a 2008 S 450 with reasonable options, I would sell mine for $21,000 (what I have in it) and 78,000 miles (will be more after driving to Naples in December).

Most of this post is factually incorrect. You cannot change the speedometer in the dash cluster or anywhere else. All you can do is get a small digital readout to the lower left of the speedo. Also, the tank is not 55 gallons. There has never been a production car in history with a tank that big. 23.5 gallons is what is put in all W221 passenger cars, no matter what country they come from.

You will have a hard time selling your Canadian car here in the US....unless you discount it deeply.

The gas tank is 90 liters. Since there are roughly 4 liters to an American gallon the math would say that the tank holds approximately 22.5 gallons. As to whether you would buy my car or not that is a personal choice just as it would be my choice as to whether I would sell to a particular person.
I've noticed the forum seems to be very irritable lately, using Mike's experience as an example. Is it a full moon or something?
