"comprehensive coverage means coverage for loss or damage other than loss or
damage to which collision coverage applies and includes coverage for loss or
damage caused by missiles, falling or flying objects, lightning, fire, theft or attempted

commotion or the stranding, sinking, burning, derailment, upset or collision of a
conveyance in or on which a vehicle is being transported on land or water, vandalism
and impact with a domestic or wild animal, either living or dead;"
Own Damage Coverage does
not cover loss or damage:
- to tires, unless the loss or damage is caused by fire, theft, or malicious mischief,
or is coincidental with other loss or damage;
- to any part of the vehicle resulting from mechanical breakdown, rust, corrosion,
wear and tear, explosion within the combustion chamber, or freezing, unless
caused by fire, theft, malicious mischief or coincidental with other loss or
damage;
- consisting of mechanical or physical failure of the vehicle or any part of it;
Finally I broke down, took a gigantic loss and traded it in on a 2013 S550 last night. Obsidian black with beige interior - P2 and AMG Sport PLUS ONE package.
I am not very happy losing money but Mercedes HYBRID is in my PAST now!!!!!

Some stuff we covered was diesel fuel introduced into a gas engine, an engine seized when a Jiffylube forgot a drain plug, and a car a teen age girl drove on the bare rims to avoid stopping at night in a bad neighborhood.
As long as the car has comp, any damage, including mechanical damage, that was caused by a sudden, accidental event (not normal wear and not a mechanical breakdown) there may be coverage.
In this guys case, someone drained the engine and forgot to refill it. We'd pay that and then go back against the shops garage keepers liability insurance for the replacement engine. Insurance carriers are usually members of binding arbitration so no lawsuits or anything. Just mail the claim and evidence to the arb board, a 3 member panel hears the case and issues a verdict.

I had an occasion where an electric Water heater catastrophically failed prematurely, my homeowners insurer eventually returned my deductible after successfully pursuing the manufacturer.
