2008 S550

I presently have a 2008 CLS550 with 115000 miles on it and needs new tires and one new wheel which is bent ! Our local dealer has a 2008 S550 with 66000 miles on it with over nine thousand dollars of options. He wants thirteen thousand dollars and my CLS for the S550. What do you think ?

He wants $25800. for the S550 and wants $13200. difference with my CLS 550. So, he is giving me $11800 for mine and I need tires and one wheel. The S550 is in excellent condition and probably priced a little low according to Kelly Bluebook. The S550 originally sold for over $100,000.

Whoa !! You are complete !! Clean Carfax, I have all maintenance records, no reported accidents, no wheel rash ,no scratches or dings, tires good with about ten thousand miles left, don't know age of batteries and don't see that it has been replaced, oil and trans fluid has been changed, control arms ?, very little seat wear if any, no rattles, interior in great condition, The CLS I am trading in has dings, been involved in hitting two deer ( $10,000 damage ) tires and one wheel shot ! Wear on inside.

On the surface I would buy the W221 just to get the trade in amount for your CLS. It sounds like the CLS is in less than pristine shape. I don't know how fussy the CLS was but be prepared for maintenance cost on the S. Since it's still below 100K miles you should think about getting a warranty and price that into the total purchase cost. You probably want it, so go for it. Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback ! I don't understand why a one hundred thousand dollar car should have so many maintenance issues ! I just don't get it ! I put 40,000 miles on the CLS with no problems at all ( 116000 total miles )

My experience with a 2007 S550 4 matic with 66,000 miles when purchased last July.
- Serpentine belt - I ended up doing it myself for $40, but I would have been happy to let the dealer do it.
- A Service - basically an oil change.
- Telematics update - done by selling dealer for free.
- The secondary air pump sounded "grindy" to me so I sprayed some lubricant in to quiet it down. I suppose this could cost something if it fails.
It now has about 72,000 miles.
The downside is that the S may have more to go wrong than the CLS. You won't be sorry driving it but it can get expensive if it needs repairs.

Sounds like a minimum $8k profit for the dealer. Not bad for them.

FYI, used CLS's bring more money than used S-classes.

I should have asked, did you negotiate down to the $25,800, or is that the starting price?

This was the asking price for the S550 . Could be bought for 25000. outright. Dealer wants 13000. and my CLS which has more miles ( 40000 more) and needs tires and one wheel.

Get it inspected if you can before buying the car. Otherwise, if you think it looks, feels, sounds and drives clean, get the VIN checked out at the local Mercedes dealership. Have them show you the service history if there was any work performed by an MB dealer. If there are no red flags then go back and negotiate the hell out of the car and try to squeeze about $2K from the asking price. Dealer's going to make money on you with the trade or with the sale so he's got room to move on either side of the deal.

Just rechecked numbers. Apparently there is a bigger spread than I thought as the higher mileage CLS gets hammered. Get them to throw in a 3 year exclusionary warranty at the price difference and you should be good to go.

You are getting hosed.

So if you haven't had any mechanical issues with your CLS, why would you need to trade it in and give up $13,000 out of your pocket when all it sounds like you need is $700 for new tires and $250 max to either get a new wheel (ebay) or get your current bent rim repaired? Just to "upgrade" to a car going on 9 years old, the same year as yours?

I'd just keep the CLS and spend the $1,000 for those maintenance items or if you really want to upgrade to the S, take the CLS to Carmax or try to sell it private party for 15k. Take that cash and the $13,000 still in your pocket and put down on a 2012 S550 low mileage with warranty for 45k. Much better car than the 08 with the improved engine.

ya a 2008 CLS with 116k miles won't sell for much more than $15k. Dealer will most likely send it to the auction. He probably paid under $20k for the S-class, so his whole profit is there. I think you will be able to negotiate with him a bit. Try get it for your CLS + $10k and see what happens, if you really like that S-class. However, as mentioned above, you should be able to sell the CLS yourself and find a newer S-class with lower miles, depending on how much you want to spend.

Quick estimate shows trade for CLS550 as 13k in excellent but not flawless condition with that mileage. Reduce by about $800 for tires and a bent wheel.
Net 13k puts you at 25k for the S550.
Note that the auction has fees and if the dealer wholesales it he's getting about 12, maybe a bit less.
I'd guess he has 2-3k in the deal plus a few hundred for financing but it could easily be less. I'm assuming you save tax by trading and it's more convenient.

The $45k 2012 is nicer and has a warranty but is obviously more expensive to purchase and likely more expensive to own. Whatever you get will depreciate, your CLS can't depreciate more than about $12k more, but the S550 s both will cost more in depreciation.

I don't want to keep beating a dead horse but according to Kelly Bluebook this 2008 S550 listed this car at a fair market price of $28000. ! Kelly also listed my CLS as a trade in value of $11,000-13,000. I figured $12000 since it has 116,000 miles and needs four new tires and wheel repair. Am I missing something ?

a 2008 s550 with over 60k miles can be had for around $20k and under, privately, usually without warranty. Mike can chime in on this, I think he got about $25k for his 2010...
