in the end, and particularly in my case, O2 sensor turned out to be at best a false alarm (even the P0016/P0017 I got in the first place are also false alarms).

@pete diegan oh man... false alarms...
Mentioning that (might be helpful for others), I was having a terrible engine misfiring in my CL550 (C216), changed 2 or 4 ignition coils, set of spark plugs, o2 sensor, and lastly the issue turned to be in the ECU itself...

ive replaced everything you can think of externally and im still getting the code p0021. New bosch o2 sensors did not work. I even cleaned the catalytic. All new magnets sensors,intake manifold took out egr and cleaned then, all new iridiums and injectors and we are still baffled. Anyone know why? Is my oil control valve clogged? Oil pressures fine. Timing is fine..please help

sometimes the error is real - the early cars did have an issue with parts that were substandard and wore heavily leading to camshaft timing issues - the main idler gear at the base of the v was made of chocolate and the teeth just vanished
