love the driving experience. so I will see it through. Seeing the other car on craigslist someone posted on this site with 434K miles was encouraging.

I am impressed how this car still rides and drives with 250K miles on it.

This is turning into a nightmare. Wishing now that I never got myself into this mess.
The front cv axles I just put on from a company called febest are already screwed. All four boots are torn and leaking grease. $600 in labor paid to put these new axles on two months ago, and theyre torn. I have driven the car under 1000 miles and they are shot. I am furious! Going to have to pay labor again for removing the axles and re booting them. Unacceptable from FEBEST. DO NOT BUY FEBEST axles from Pompano Beach Florida.
If you do, immediately install Mercedes Benz boot kit to eliminate this issue.

Learn from me lol

Sorry to hear this, guess this is another reason why one should not buy aftermarket parts.

When faced with $3000 for factory axles I do not think anyone here with a 250K mile s550 would do it either.
Makes no financial sense.

I have authorized them to pull the axles after I photographed everything and we are going to reboot them with mercedes boots.

My front differential is also bad in addition to my xfer case. Heard it all today on the lift. Sounds like marbles are inside the transfer case and the diff. I just scored a front diff on ebay with 20K miles for $900 bucks, so we will do that and the axles at the same time.

I think the axles themselves are fine, just the boots are cheap Chinese garbage. Ludicrous is what MB charges for boot kits... Going to be about another $650 for just boot kits for both sides. Making my $850 set of new axles $1450 axles.

stupid deep. At this point I would not sell it. To spend all this cash and then dump it for who knows what its worth as it is, would just be a waste. SO I am going to finish this thing. At this point everything but the engine and trans will be new lol. suspension, front diff, xfer case, axles etc. May as well enjoy it after this

TOTALLY agree.
How much more did you put into it? With your low purchase price, I would still consider it a good deal if you come out in the 8k range after it is all said and done.
Keep in mind, ALL should then be good (at least for a while), which is a great piece of mind.
What car can you get for 8k? You could drive a Honda Accord with 100k plus miles on it, but who wants to drive this compared to the W221?

I will probably be 10-13K in I think when all is set and done. The transfer case and front differential are just killers.

Just proves with German cars, there is no good deal lol

You gave up? I thought you had the stereo fixed.

I as well am thinking about selling mine, it is just too big as a daily. Thinking about going back to E class or even C, not sure yet.

A couple of points...

1. Why wouldn't you rebuild the original CV Axles with Mercedes boots?
2. The CV Axles you purchased should have a 1 year warranty
3. I replaced one of my front CV Axles with a Febest this summer, 5,000 miles later, it's still intact.

1. I did not want to wait to have my axles rebuild. One was stuck on the car so badly the shop destroyed it getting it out. No local shops rebuild these.
2. I have not been able to get febest to call me back or answer the phones. As a result I have initiated a dispute with my card company
3. mine did not last 1000 miles. The boots are cheap chinese garbage and are cracking all over and split in a couple places. In order to save the axle it must be fixed before driven any further.

I just ordered the front differential, so the car is about to get a 20K mile front diff, MB axle boots, upper control arms and sway bar links up front. So that will be done finally here within two weeks I would think.

From there I still need to track down a good transfer case to address that issue along side a transmission fluid leak.

After that I still need engine and trans mounts done.

At that point, I think I will have this project under control. So many times I wanted to throw in the towel.

$650 to repair, $850 to swap it out if it is repairable.
