W221 v12
Newbie looking for some 722.6 help

Hello all

I just traded my Range Rover for a w221 v12

Seemed like a good idea at the time 😊

Anyway, the car had a rebuilt transmission and seemed to run well

I found out when cold it shifts very hard between 2 and 3, fell like you pop the clutch

Anyway, I have a buyer’s guaranty so I drop the car off at my local MB repair shop

After a test drive they told me that it was the torque converter that needed to be replaced

So I let them go ahead and replace it, my part of the deductible was just over $1000 and it did not fix anything!

What now?

I got a scan tool and this did not get any codes from the gearbox but I did find some odd things in the live data

Like

Both Target gear and Actual gear always show “N” regardless of what gear I am in

The Selector displays the correct gear

Could this be the problem?

I think the workshop will just continue to changes parts until someone stops paying them

Thanks for any feed back

Do you have any other options where you live for MB service? Sounds like you have multiple issues and need a shop that cares about a good outcome for you.

Torque converter for a 2-3 hard shift? Not much sense there. Also ... not knowing anything about the shop ... did they show you the old torque converter? As in, did they really replace it?

HI dlafever
I think they assumed it was the converter lockup clutch not working
I have a feeling that it could be low oil pressure in to the converter, but after seeing that
Both Target gear and Actual gear always show “N” regardless of what gear I am in, this cant be right
anything more I can check?
I have no idea :-(

Update transmission control unit software. I had same 2 to 3 gear issue as you on w219 and my current w221. Update solved problem. Also did fluid flush later to make transmission as good at it can.

Really need to get this connected to a Xentry (factory diagnostics) system and see what it thinks is wrong. A control unit update might just be the fix, but a Xentry system is required to do that as well so you would be well served to scan for other problems at the same time.

I have a similar issue on my S600. Abrupt shifting 1-2 and 2-3, ONLY when cold. Once the transmission warms up, it's smooth as silk. I recently replaced the conductor plate, and I suspect either a slightly sticky solenoid, or a nicked O-ring. Just a suspicion... I won't know until I get it up on a lift again and drop the tranny pan and valve body. When I have a chance to do that, I'll flush out and clean the solenoids and replace the O-rings. I have debated whether or not to replace the valve body with a rebuilt unit... haven't really decided. Fortunately these are very, very common transmissions, and parts are relatively inexpensive.
