Windshield replacement

I just got my windshield replaced, due to a crack. The insurance company (insurance replaces them for free here in SC, up to 2 a year) sent an glass company to do the replacement. I'm hearing wind noise from the windshield now. Does non OEM windshield make that big of a difference? Or is there a special way to install it? Seemed like this that was that particular installers first S-Class. He had alot of questions, and couldn't get the wipers to work, and was confused why they weren't working (hood was open), and then couldn't get the wipers off, etc...

Anyway, point is at 60+ mph there is wind noise from my windshield now. At 70 it's very very noticeable. Before i call that company, i was wondering if there is anything i need to know.

Thank you in advance.

wipers on Merc are special if the bonnets open they don't run, on the S pick them off the screen and place where you want all very strange
dependant on spec there a lots of element on the screen.... IR Tint, gaps in the IR for gadgets, heating round the edge, cut out for cameras etc.

the trim over the roof / tops of the doors would be something to check were refitted well
some pattern screens have a self adhesive strip for the wiper mechanism plastic trim cover to clip to.... and they fall off as its refitted.... and on mine the bottom of the screen isn't the original shape, so the trim doesn't fit as nicely in the bottom corners.... a few mm off
but mine makes no noise, its a big screen and needs careful fitting

Need to have installing company revisit with experienced tech. No experienced techs, request insurance company approve MB dealer visit to correct install. Dealer will most likely sub contract who may choose to install different glass but all should be proper thereafter.

It wouldn’t have been “first S class” at your Mercedes dealer and your insurance would have paid for that I bet. The installer would likely have been a subcontractor to the dealer and you would work out problems with the dealer service manager.

Appreciate the replies guys, thanks. They're going to send another tech out to check it out and make some adjustments. We will see how that goes.

Been through both scenarios, OEM at dealer and non OEM at a trusted Indi when I had to pay. HUGE difference. Always OEM from now on and dealer if insurance pays. Always guaranteed for a year is an added plus.

-That much of a difference? Was it the wind noise that you're talking about?

The first was OEM at the dealer. Had no glass coverage at the time so I out a regular claim with a 1,000 deductible. Only way to tell was that the road rash was no longer there. Total was about $1,950. The second was at my trusted Indi with Chinese after market. Total was under $700. Aberrations took a while to get used to and no probs with install. Both above on the S5504M. Next was the "convenient at your driveway" option with after market from Safelite but through insurance for a 2014 Lexus GS350. Was worth trying it out since the lease was ending in a week. The tech knew the process at a generic level but still did break the clips from the side moldings when pulling them out. The first windshield he brought out of his van had a big horizontal scratch right in the middle, a good 3 inches long. He tried to buff it out which of course did not work. Since I wanted to... (Wtf...?), He left and came back with another. Aberrations galore. - I did learn some interesting things though, like for example that Audi will not accept a return lease with anything but OEM, and that Hyundai Genesis windshield is among the most expensive windshields at about $4,200. More recently, had OEM parts at the dealer for the 2016 350E Wagon which has the smart light, distronic etc. Only 6 windshields were available in the entire country and in addition to the placement there was also the calibration of the sensors (per the insurance company. No issues other than the dealer being a total $&I+hole and the SA's sad hustlers. I never had issues with noise though.

Thank you very much for the info. I will be going OEM from now on for sure. Because the windshield that's on there now, is noisy, very noisy.

Yeah, I have a clause in my insurance policy that any glass will be replace by factory, OEM glass. There's too much going on with the night vision, etc to go with aftermarket. Also, having non MB glass is a ding on resale value IMHO
