Just cancel the programming, should just work without it. Say you'll have them do the programming if you have problems and just pick up the key.
Agree, you don't need programming if you can lock and unlock just by touching the handle with the key in your pocket. I think I paid $350 for a key almost 6 years ago, no programming needed.

I believe what I've read in other threads is that their idea of programing is to insert the key into the ignition and starting the car with the key to make sure it recognizes the key. That's about it. They can also delete lost keys from the system, but if I lost a key I'd like to think one day I'd find it and then you'd probably have to pay to get it to work again. And if it's the previous owner that has the key, I'm not too worried about them coming to steal their car back.

I got a key for my 2013 model as it came with only one. $600+ for the key and it was given to me in the unopened package from MB in Germany.
I just tested the door locks and assumed all was fine but when I tried to start the car with the push button it would not do anything.
Then had this thought that perhaps the key needs to be used once in the ignition to somehow learn the key to the car and after I did that the push button started working. I believe this one time turn key procedure is what they call programming.
