Akebono Pads

Replaced the front pads and rotors on my S550 about a month ago and am getting so squeal from the brakes. It is usually during harder stops and right before the car completely stops. I did lube the backs of the pads during install so I'm wondering if this is normal for these pads or if I should pull them off and lube some different areas.

Thanks

I dont recall if initially there was some squeal when I did mine, but I currently do not have that issue. They do work amazingly well as far as no brake dust.

Yes, they do squeal and much more on my W221 than on my W163, W210 or W212. I've found that the W221 is the only car on which I've needed to use some brake pad paste to eliminate the squeal. All the other cars it was just a small squeal first thing in the morning that was gone after I backed out of my garage. I've been using this stuff and am happy with the results.

Not to discourage you but that was the reason I took mine off. Squealing drove me crazy and yes I loaded the back of them with paste. They squealed on my BMW as well.. Also even though they are great with the dusting, their stopping abilities do not even come close to the oem ones.

Interesting. I use them on all my cars and have for years and have never had a squealing issue or heard of it until now.

I noticed a little bit of brake squeal after installing Akebono Euros on mine. Like the OP, at walking speed or slower, right before a stop. I was less than thrilled about it, but it only lasted a couple of weeks and seems to have gone away completely and hasn't come back.

Thanks for the info guys. It makes me feel better that it wasn't an installation issue. I think I can live with it.

I get a front brake squeal when backing out of my garage at low speeds with the akebonos. Usually, if I power wash the car and clear out between the pad and rotor, it goes away for a few weeks, so I think it's a buildup of road grime.

So my squeal hasn't gone away and I actually think it's worse. I'm going to have the car in the air soon for a transmission fluid change and to switch over to my winter rims/tires and while I'm at all that I need to do something about the brakes.

Should I try and load them up with lube? Should the pins be lubed also? Besides OEM, is there another brand you guys suggest?

I just changed to the E55 front and rear brake set up using Akebono ceramics not long ago, front and rear. Still quiet as a mouse.

You don't have to bed them, but I do anyway...not sure if this makes a difference for the squeal or not though. Paste on the pins isn't needed but you could, to rule it out.

Just did a brake job on mine, had squeal on drivers side intermittently. Pulled pads, added more lube to back, sides and pad retaining clip, squeal now gone. For the record, I think fixed calipers are such a better design. No slide pins to worry about, easy to pull pads to re-lube. And they look cool.

I can't remember what the pads look like anymore, but did you lube the 'ears'?

Update on my akebono squeal: the pads were worn and needed to be replaced.

Thanks for the tips guys. Alright, well at least I have a game plan. I am going to get them all lubed up when I do the wheel swap, then if they are still squealing when it's time to swap back in the spring I'm going to switch to another brand/type of pad.
