Thumbs down Fuel stop nightmare

So I pull into my favorite gas station to fill up my S600. Pop in the credit card, pop in the nozzle, fueling away. Pop the hood to add a little windshield washer fluid. Man, she drinks it. Give her all she wants. Hop back in and start her up and go. And then about 10 feet later I hear a clunk. Stop the car and Oh Sh*t, I forgot to put the fuel nozzle back in the machine. Sure enough, it was laying on the ground. No fuel leaking out so I was lucky. But I definitely put a heavy load on that gas filler pipe. And it was a lot harder to put my fuel cap back on.

The fuel gauge is working, no codes (yet), engine is smooth, and the car rides like normal. I was just having thoughts of my next "A" service at the dealer turning into a new fuel tank and associated electronic components replace due to driver stupidity.

The filler is connected to the tank with flexible connections. I would not be worried about anything with the tank or internals of it.

The only damage I see could be at the end of the filler and you said it was a little harder to put the cap on. If the edge of the filler got bent enough you could have a seal leak, which could trigger the CEL but if you drive a day without the light you should be fine other than tighter than normal cap.

There was a not great book where a doctor, who's wife had died, would monthly leave the gas station with the hose still attached. The gas station had his information, would send him the bill.
