Sway Bar Bushings

I am searching for sway bar bushings for a 2010 S550 4matic but am having some trouble locating the bushings only as they are making a clunking sound (I have replaced front end suspension parts/control arms) . I am unsure if certain bushings I have researched do fit as I am not looking to get the entire sway bar itself. Any help would be much appreciated.

I had the same clunky sound from my front end. Replaced lower control arms on both sides and it solved the clunky sound and with a fresh alignment all is like new. Are you sure the bushings are bad? The only replacement I found was for the entire sway bar assembly,no bushes available for it. Let me know if you need the part number for the assembly.

also there are you tube pieces on gluing the sway bar bushing to repair. Thankful that new parts solved mine and I didn’t need to go further

Thanks for the reply! I also replaced the lower fwd and lower rearward control arms along with the stabilizer bar links on both sides for all parts. I glued the bushings about 2yrs ago one the sway bar and I believe that’s the only other suspension part making noise as it has been replaced...

Usually the "clunking" sound is the result of worn sway bar links.

Thanks for the reply! I changed out the stabilizer bar/sway bar links as well on both front driver and passenger sides but still have the clunking sound.

I also experienced noise come from sway bar bushing, open the sway bar mount I realized that bushings rubber is not broken but it dried over the time and make bushing smaller than normal it is then therefore it can rotate in side a mount causing a noise.

attached is photo of the mounts, it show clearly that bushing rotating in side and usually it should not. We need a special glue for properly correct, for my case glue is not available then I used a piece of rubber to reinforce the mount.

By the way, you must glue them to mount and bar.

thank you! I forgot to glue them to the mount but did to the bar. The new bushing did not fit so I went with my old bushings as they did not appear to be cracked or too bad. I will report back once it cures, and if it makes noise I will go back and glue the bushings to the mount.

Ordered new bushings and they do not fit. I tried to use the old bushings and cut some rubber to place inside the mount as well and still no luck. The part number for the incorrect bushings of which I ordered is 2213231765. Does anyone have the correct part number and where to order in the states as I am looking to get the part asap and ordering outside the states is a bit of a pain due to the pandemic.

Why don't you order from the dealer?

ISPUSA: 2213231765 is torsion bar part # and not compatible with 4matic. Either hunt for 2213230965 aftermarket compatible replacement bushings or replace torsion bar.

So they are just like the W220 4MATIC then where the bushings are part of the bar. Thanks Konig 👍

When I called the dealer they informed me that they do not sell the bushings separately from the torsion bar.

Thank you! I used your information and ordered some bushing from a company called Siberian bushing USA.

https://siberianbushing.com/part/11-01-3553

Update/Edit (7/14/21)- these bushings did not fit and are too big. I will have to use a Dremel to shave off some of the rubber to make them similar to the stock bushings.

It is insane that you have to buy the entire swaybar with the bushes which by the way are permanently glued to the swaybar. I found a source in Latvia off of eBay for OEM bushings I will try to find the link and post it later. I installed them dry and unfortunately it still clunked. I then lubricated them with silicone based grease and the car rides like new again. BTW Mercedes does sell the adhesive for those bushings but I opted not do it that way I felt that a lubricated bushing was superior.

True, for sure over time I guess the sway bar could work its way left or right off center. I cannot find the ones from Latvia, the ones I bought were OEM Mercedes brand this was a few years ago but there are tons of aftermarket ones on ebay cheap.

When I replaced the starter I had to poem the sway bar bushing brackets to lower the bar down for room to work on the starter. I noticed that I could not turn the rubber bushings on the bar. I first thought they got stuck but now I have read that the bushings are glued to the bar and are not supposed to turn on the bar.

This is a very strange design as the rubber bushings have oval shape “****” on the outer surface that match openings on the bushing brackets, i.e. the rubber bushings are made not to turn in the brackets either. This means the rotation of the bar is allowed only by the flex of the rubber bushing material.

Bapmic offers a sway bar and bushings for less than $100 for base non ABC cars (Part # 54447YP). I ordered one to see how good it is. I'm doing a full front suspension replacement on my 07.

bonding of the bushes to the arm was one of the first TIPS docs released for the 221 to combat noise - with it being such a tank a few ideas to mechanically locate clearly had no effect

konigstiger posts LOTS of support on the woeful design of Mercedes - you should put a week in your diary to touch upon a few of the many issues the 221 has

Yes that is correct I just remembered that while reading your post there was a tsb on it. So one can come to the conclusion that the bushings were not bonded from the factory but noise developed over time and that was their fix.
I chose to lubricate mine which works great but I have to relube them every year. Next time I may drill a hole and put a grease fitting in.
