USA / CANADA CLUSTER PROGRAMMING FOR BRAKE SYMBOL HELP!
Another little challenge popped up on my saga to import my recently acquired w221 S450 2008 to the States. According to the registered importer, since Mercedes’ is not going to give me a letter of compliance, one of the requirements in the USA is the brake indicator on the cluster must A. Color in Red and B. Say the word BRAKE instead of the symbol used in the rest of the world. Being that the cluster is full digital does anyone know if it’s possible to get this programmed rather than just replacing the cluster? Any help would be so highly appreciated. Including pictures of what my cluster is currently and what it has to go thru to be imported.

Anything about check engine? I noticed my cluster has a CHECK ENGINE light as well as the engine graphic. After I finished making jokes about German cars and CELs, I was left wondering which parts of the world now use which lights, and if that is also a Canada vs US thing?
the central screen is a LCD display it can show anything its programmed to do. There are 4 software elements to the cluster, region and language are two or the four. It will take 40 mins to flash with an update although in Merc time it says 90 mins
they are multiple parameters than can be manually changed - but it needs high level kit and some German translation to get you there.
for instance you can turn on a digital Tank Level display (it shows with one more upward toggle past current trip reading). And I recommend to Turn Off the pointless and irritating red petrol pump symbol.
Its also where F to C temp units hide, and MPH to KPH reside (later cars got the user menu to do the speed units by the operator)

Thanks BOTUS, so good news is I would not have to change out the cluster and it is possible to get the brake symbol replaced with the BRAKE word?
I guess somehow you need to authorise the car to accept a Canadian market update or get an expert to manually configure in software the changes to stop the tester moaning
on the back of the cluster is a sticker (that tends to fall off) showing the 4 software iterations it left the building with
proper dealer tools will also allow you to view without getting your tools out - all done over the ODB2 port
some one like BenzNinja will be able to sort it, but you need the right toys for him to remotely connect up and do the work

Hello, were you able to get this fixed? I am trying to fix this for a c63 amg 2013 p31 package. My current brake signal is the exclamation point and I need to change it to say BRAKE. My plan was to buy a cluster with mph (which says BRAKE on it) and remotely program the cluster with an expert I found (from a trusted source). I am hoping this is the last thing I need to do before I get the car imported from Canada to the USA. Let me know if you ran into any other issues at the border.

I've never done it but that really doesn't sound right. Everything with regional variations on it is a digital screen. If you buy a new cluster, I believe it's going to be the same cluster you already have. You can change Kilometers to Miles on the menu screen. It's in the owner's manual.

I want to change it to a mph cluster (USA version) which will also contain the word BRAKE, which should solve the issue to import the car from Canda to USA.
