2007 W221 Telematics Update: No longer being performed

Ok I've read about this telematics/COMAND update since getting this car late last year. I had been busy traveling for work, but since I had some downtime recently I figured I'd call the 'ol Stealership and see what they'd charge me for their telematics update services. The girl I spoke with had absolutely no idea what I was referring to, and had "no idea how to go about finding that out" for me. Completely useless. I had her confirm no other service bulletins were outstanding on my car and got off the phone.

Now from what I've read, it's best to find a shop that can actually guarantee this beforehand, rather than taking it somewhere for them to use my car as a Guinea pig (as I would be). I'm not above taking it to an Indy but the ones around me have not yet been able to guarantee this is something they're capable of. I'm running out of options in my part of Florida.

I'm looking for a pro, maybe with experience using SDS to update their vehicle themselves. I'd shell out the cash for the equipment, as I'm very DIY/tech-savvy. The service girl's response has left me thinking these cars are no longer being serviced properly at the MB dealer near me. I'm also not comfortable going there to spend any amount of money if I can do it myself. I'd love a little insight on how to do this myself/what exactly to get. I've seen lots on eBay for $500+ with a Dell laptop and cables for STAR but at the same time I'm unsure what I actually need to perform this update myself; discs, etc.

p.s. what else is Star used for? If I shelled out for the system what else would I/could I use it for? If everything else on my car is up to code, would there be any point getting my own SDS for just one update or is it a worthy investment for DIY-ers?

So there are tons of replies about this on the forum. I have a 2007 S600 now with 79K miles. We both have the 3.0 version of COMMAND. There is an update to 3.5 available and you can read about it on the forum. When you do the update, the big issue with the 2007 was the air conditioner clutch setting in DAS. You will read about guys updating COMMAND and losing A/C until the setting for the A/C compressor clutch is turned off but only for 2007 cars. Maps were no longer updated after about 2014 so at best you will be seven years behind your telephone maps. Finally, there was a separate issue about time/date management related to the 19 year cycle which was fixed by PolarBear on this forum and was adopted by Mercedes so you can use the satellites instead of resetting the time in an underground garage that blocks the satellites. For that you do not need DAS but you do need to burn a CD to perform the update. Again, tons of info on this forum. You can also read about BenzNinja on this forum who can help you update anything and everything remotely.

Probably a lot more than you wanted to know. Keep us posted.

Dealers, don't now what they are talking about never did

It may well be the dealers no longer have the update CD that loads the software - or indeed maybe Merc aren't offering it as something for anyone to buy
The world should have moved on and they do it via a download but who knows - I expect they think they all died and so don't support this era any more

either find a dealer / specialist who still has the right tools and update cd and or get BenzNinja to remotely do it - and remember to TELL them to turn the AC back on when the update completes - they won't - and you'll need to got back for another 15 mins session to turn on the AC compressor - no idea why but the process turns it off on the early car's and they never remember to re enable

map updates are separate - depends where u are Europe last got an update to 2019 v17 - USA got stuck in 2015

to see if the comand is pretty much where its should have been - in Navigation - look in - Map view for - Bird's Eye view. If you have this its been updated and whilst maybe some tiny changes since - Traffic "enabled" for USA region and Bird's eye (3d view) for all, plus many major bug fixes all came out in 2008 for the first mini facelift cars release.
