“Brake Wear” light

I have a 2007 s550 and the “brake wear” sensor light came on. Does this mean I have to replace both the pads and rotors or just the pads?

What pads should I be looking to get? Ceramic? From where?
And how do I know if its front brakes, read brakes, or both?

any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

i'd visually check the pads wear first, just in case if it's just the sensor that needs to be replaced...
generally, it's good to replace rotors with pads as resurfacing cost is similar...

Pretty easy to see, which pads are toast and those that are not. You don’t even need to take the wheels off to see the pads - unless you have some seriously EV styled moon disc wheels; if there is no meat left on the pads then replace them.

Generally speaking, most rotors are replaced after the 2nd set of pads, meaning when you are replacing the 2nd set for the 3rd set…then replace the rotors.

Also, most rotors have a wear indicator - which would normally be on the outer edge of the rotor; check that and or if the rotor has more than a millimeter of wear, I’d replace it. In saying that, if you’re just puttering around town and no fun stuff, you might be good for a 3rd set on the rotors. You’ll also need to replace the wear indicator on the passenger side.

Seek professional advice lol 👍😂😎
