Wheel speed sensor destroyed

Been having the dreaded ABS/ESP error message on the display.

scanner showed no communication with the ABS/ESP module

Had the module repaired.

Scanner now showed front left sensor issue.

Took the sensor out to replace. It was almost half missing. As if it was grinding against the reluctor ring.

My theory is that the ring got swollen because of rust and destroyed the sensor. Does that sound possible?

It looks like the ring can’t be replaced. Am I right?

Only option is to replace the axle?

There seem to be super cheap axles available (like $100-200 cheap, rockauto type places). Should I steer clear?

I just want the car to be driveable so we can sell it for cheap.

Thanks in advance 👍

I can't find it - on many the reluctor is the inside wheel bearing / seal... it can't be static it must turn, so the static sensor see's wheel movement - second hands is fine if in good enough condition

The reluctor ring is not on the either of the front axles. It's on the bearing that is inside the steering knuckle.

The reluctor is built into the oil seal - I replaced both recently when I did the wheel bearings - the bearings usually come as a kit which includes new oil seals.

Interesting… so I’ll forget about the axle.

Anybody have a part # for the oil seal? I don’t see the part on the diagram.

How much of a pain is it to replace the bearings? I am worried this will be outside my DIY skill range 😆

it will need to be pressed out (and the new one pressed in) - few people have that at home...

you could get the bits, strip it down and take to a competent garage to swap the bearings - but they get funny as not much profit and can't vouch u assembled it right - it why getting to know them and taking other business to them helps u both out

The process is reasonably straightforward but you do need a hydraulic press to do the job properly. You also have to remove one of the old bearing races from the hub - the only way to do that is to cut it off very carefully using an angle grinder with a thin blade - and it's vital that the blade doesn't touch the hub itself. Then you need to be able to measure the hub end float to within 0.001" - easy with a dial gauge and magnetic base - google it!
On a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is changing the oil and 10 is a full engine rebuild I'd give it a 4!

Thank guys. Appreciate the help.

Trying to identify the seal. Anybody have a diagram?

I see the circlip and bearing but no seal 🤷‍♂️

Cheers!

Sorry El Kimo - I think I have misled you! I've only just noticed that your car is 4-wheel drive - mine is rear wheel drive. Sorry for the confusion!

I see a lot of places sell front hub assemblies. From the photos, it looks like the bearing is pre-pressed. That would solve the problem of pressing in the bearing.

It just seems to be that removing the hub assembly might be a huge PITA. Am I right?

don't know

just did some on my father's e class (w211), on this its swap out the whole hub - new one comes with bearings and seals in place - the labour to source seals and to knock them out, and fit new is probably more than a mega discount from your main parts guy

not sure on the 221 if the world works the same way, likely not as its the whole knuckle on a 4 x 4
