Engine Control Module / Unit (ECM / ECU) Replacement
My father’s 2007 S550 4Matic had its ECU go out and apparently it’s unrepairable because one of the electrolytic capacitors is what blew on the board covering the circuit in acid/toxic material. I’ve called Mercedes and found that the part number is A273-153-56-79 and if bought through Mercedes is $2,050. I did find a company Precision ECU selling a remanufactured one for $1,205. I’m also aware the part has to be coded to the VIN of the vehicle.
Has anyone ever had a problem with their ECU and if so has anyone been able to order a replacement part from Precision ECU or any other company and had successful results? I’d love to know if there are any cheaper options and if anyone in Chicago area knows a place that are knowledgeable to do ECU work.
At this point in his life, my father no longer drives and only likes to be driven in this vehicle so that’s why my siblings and I want to get it fixed however just upsetting it’s so expensive and strange why the sealed electronics failed like this when the vehicle is hardly used and when used it’s driven gently.

ebay $100 secondhand then get an expert to virginise and input your chassis number, immobiliser and mileage info - in Poland u could sort this for $50 in 2hrs of a Saturday morning - there'll be a crook near you - you just need to find them

Just to conclude on this, I was able to get a used ECM on eBay and my independent mechanic had it recoded. I also replaced the two batteries, at least one of them was original manufactured in 2006! That’s probably why ECM got affected, voltage dips or spikes from the batteries. Car only has 61k miles. Still drives like a dream.

FYI do you have an oil leaks around the cams ? common issue on earlier ones, the oil leak and tracks down the wiring looms and fills the engine ECU with contaminated mix of dust, water, oil and combustion by products - if this is what blew the original ECU its possible it will do it again

I have used https://www.pressertech.com/ with my failed ECM. Shipped it out to them, they tested and confirmed it to be unrepairable, Flashed my vehicles info and shipped a replacement out in 24 hours. Was plug and play. Right at $1k.

Covers any/all repairs due to damage from oil leak however, notes replacement of leaking camshaft solenoid is not permitted under consequential damage.
Approximately 557,108 vehicles are affected. Have dealer check VMI to determine if vehicle is included. Service Campaigns are covered out of warranty.
