Smile Always check the easy stuff first

So my S600 was blocking my wife's 2000 500SL in the driveway. As I walked out to move my car for her, I smell this awful strong aroma of fresh fuel. I walk back in and ask if she had recently filled the tank. Of course, she said. Why? I said, I think you have a fuel leak but it could be a bad fuel cap. Did you notice anything when you filled up? Nope.

So I walk back out, open her fuel flap, and of course, the cap is totally loose enough to fall off if the flap is left open. I tighten the fuel cap properly and wish my wife a pleasant day!

Always check the easy stuff first. I am betting the Mercedes dealership would have charged me $1700.

Yes, it has the old vacuum locks and the flap was closed and locked. More of user error.....she probably just didn't tighten the cap.

I love her anyway, so you make accommodations...... More than 45 years (same woman!).

But I did strut my stuff after realizing I had probably saved $1700.

On that note, I tried to be a "hoodie" the other day by siphoning fuel from my 2013 W212 to transfer to my Ducati as I ran it dry into the garage the other day and my fuel can was empty. I used 1/4" vinyl tubing and stuffed it down into the fuel neck as far as I could but was unable to bypass what I'm now assuming to be an ant-siphoning block of some sort about 18" into the fuel neck, perhaps to prevent this very situation? Do our cars, and possibly many other late-model cars have that? Is this even a thing, or was I just not doing it right? I ended up driving to the damn petrol station to fill my fuel can then drive home just so I could hop on the pasta rocket and go about my day

lots of cars do have anti-siphoning stuff - what it is I have no idea

My BM tractor had a flap at the top that the right size nozzle released (by pressing in a little catch) - if u saw and had a small long screw driver you could release it then get if to open - but that might have been trying to stop misfueling (as only the right nozzle would get it to work)
