Well,
It is 14 years old so I think it can go just like the camshaft sensors.
The sensor is a Hall sensor meaning it has a magnet in it and magnets go weaker over time. If magnet goes too weak the sensor stops working, right?.

Finally got the crank shaft sensor replaced today. It was not an easy job from bottom side to get the T30 bit on the screw with a short ratchet on it but got it done.Had to take the exhaust bracket off for some room for my hand/arm.

No huge improvement on how the car runs but it does start faster and perhaps is a bit “peppier”, but this could be just anticipated wish, but it does start taster.

I'm a big fan of the MB Maintenance program, it's super convenient and helps me stay on top of my 2022 S580's schedule. I've also found that using the correct type of fuel (UL93, in my case) helps keep my engine happy and running smoothly.

Hall sensor works differently from pulse generator. Pulse generator uses wire wrapped around a magnet or armature such that as the trigger passes it DC voltage is created. Two wires to the sensor. Analog sine wave signal. Hall Effect sensor uses a sensor that detects the trigger passing and allows voltage supplied by the control unit to pass. Makes a digital signal. In practice they both fail; always at the most inopportune moment. Often intermittently. There is good reason I kept a crank position sensor and tools to replace it in the glove box of the E-55.

Surely the only reason to buy a new car is to not have to DIY anything on it🤔

Not that there's much of anything made in the last 5 to 10 years worth buying in the first place.🤐

If you are a DIYer, that’s something to keep in mind when buying a recent model used car and especially a new car.
I have XENTRY/DAS.
