S-Class Which Black?
Hey guys, I'm in the market for an S Class. Can't decide which black. What black do you guys think this is:

The dealer says I should get Obsidian but I am feeling flat. Just don't want to kill resell value.
Thanks!

I cannot think of others helping you to decide on the colour of the car.
Obsidian black is the safe choice. If I would take a black car, I would select magnetite black, a very dark grey colour.

You can't differentiate blacks from a picture unless it is up very close and you can maybe see the flecks of paint.
Clearly a personal choice with respect to color and amount of work to keep scratches off and looking good.
What color interior are you thinking about?

Personally, I love solid black, the non-metallic one. There's just something so elegant about it but beware of the maintenance and swirls.
If you want a lighter black, I also really like Designo Platinum Black Metallic as seen in the this video:
It's black most of the time but with direct light, it sparkles a bit like Designo Graphite.
If you want a deep black with lower maintenance than solid black, then get Obsidian Black.

Not sure where you live but every major high end hotel will probably also have an S class in black as a house car. The interior will be black as well.

Buyers still assume that there is a big difference between the two, like there was in the early days.

This is a bit of a marketing trick but the standard 040 black isn't very popular in Europe because it comes at no extra cost and owners prefer one of the extra cost options, "metallic colour" obsidian or magnetite (not that much of the Designo colours that are significantly ore expensive).

Either way, you will love your car. Returning home tomorrow.

I've owned a 040 Black, 2008 E550 since day 1 and yes, black is difficult to keep clean, but I have it on a maintenance plan with a mobile detailer. $200/mo and he comes every week. Worth every penny. No swirls, peace of mind, no need to worry that I drove it in the rain, etc. Its almost always clean. Love black when kept clean.

on the other hand, my iridium silver paint job still looks brand new after detailed...and it's over 5 years old already

haha yeah, even with obsidian black (and the car is less the two years old!), there are quite a few swirls, granted I don't have the luxury of having a professional detailer weekly

maybe I could afford a weekly detail........but I wouldn't want to pay for it......my paint was also 040, it's a big job hence the once a week example.....
I just washed my CLS last night which is Iridium also and as you mentioned, it still looks great, true enough there isn't anything as sexy as a clean black car

Didn't we do the factory tour together? I had my 3 boys with me. There were two other s 550 deliveries that day. Are you the one who has an F car ( per my sons ) or the tall gentleman who came with a wife and lived in Germany for few years?

I was there with my 2 daughters and wife. I had an FF which wasn't really useful as a daily driver. So glad to back with MB. It was nice chatting with you guys, we had a great trip. I put 1025 miles on the car in 8 days, great trip but glad to be back home, really missing the car though. How were your travels in Europe?
