That's really terrible mileage. I'm averaging 17-17.5 on Long Islands slow roads (average speed under 29 in DIC). On the highway I have seen 26-28. I haven't been on any long trips yet though. My car has 1100 miles on it so I might also see an improvement as it breaks in. I also have sports with 20's.

The mileage is better than I expected and better than my 2007 S550. It blows away my 2012 750iL. But that I expected, that car was a pig....

We just took a long trip in our 2010 E350 and got 32.0 MPG! I'll take that all day and ride in the comfort and luxury of a Mercedes E Class! So there, all you boxy little "economy" cars!

I've come close to 30 on my 2014 GL350. And that's a full size suv....

I was asking the same thing a month ago, then after 1,800 miles on the clock my fuel economy finally started moving up. My experience is in Eco mode, Distronics on, steady speed at 70 mph. Reaching 28+mpg last weekend on the way back from Daytona Beach, I could have had favorable winds helping. On the way up to Daytona Beach I had a 25.5 mpg average @ 70 mph.

I imagine once we get the winter fuel blend down here in FL, my mileage will probably suffer till spring.

Ok, Hyperion, I'll give you that one. You do have more power. You can probably pass more cars, but I can pass more gas stations.

I watched Motor Week on TV and they reviewed the 2014 S class. They said "From our first moments behind the wheel of the all new S550, it was clear Mercedes-Benz is attempting to elevate S-class’ status enough to actually replace the ultra-exclusive Maybach. So, forget about competing with the 7-Series and A8, the new S-Class now has Bentley and Rolls-Royce in its sights.

And just like those high roller rides, there’s really no end to the list of options you can add in order to make your “S” a one of a kind piece. But Benz is also attempting to match unbridled opulence at a more attainable price...It clearly has replaced Maybach, and without a question has become the new benchmark for the “mass produced” premium luxury sedan class."

Nice praise for you "S classers"!

Actually, the S probably has better range- but that's due to its 22 gallon fuel tank . I regularly go 320-340 miles in city driving with average speeds under 30...

I continue to get superb gas mileage for such a huge vehicle. Even if the computer is lying to me by 1-2 mpg, I would still average at 27-29 mpg on the interstates.

I believe the car's computer is far more reliable then us relying on refueling our cars to the exact top-off level each and every time we manually calculate our fuel numbers.

When we compare our fuel economy with one another, using the car's computer figures would make it an apples to apples comparison.

I would say the most important aspect is the DIC average speed. That tells a lot about the mileage. From an average of 25 to 32 my mileage goes from 15 to 18. People always say "I get xx in city driving". We need to define city driving. It couldn't be more different if you were in NYC or Iowa.

I find MB's calculated mpg to be very accurate. I usually pump within .2-.3 of what the DIC claims. My BMWs were always very optimistic...

Heh... I got 38 MPG out of my fiance's 2012 GAS VW Passat driving from Daytona -> St. Augustine. 5 Cylinder engine, but still... better mileage than a Prius would be able to accomplish...and the Passat has a back seat approx the same size as the S.

Does Distronic give you the best mileage or can you do better on your own?

and does the winter blend in FL make that much of a difference?

If you go to the 1st page of this tread you'd see the photo I took last year of my 2009 E320 Bluetec getting 41.6 MPG @70 MPH Driving back from Daytona to Port St. Lucie (160 mi).

I use to own a 2004 Prius and got about 50+MPG average on my same Daytona trip.
Distronics takes the hassle and stress out of getting the best fuel economy.
Winter blend gas in FL is about the same for the entire East Coast. I usually get about 2 MPG less with the winter blend in my Harley. I haven't had a gasoline car since 2008 until this summer.
