Question Ceramic Coating vs Synthetic Sealant for a New S class?

Hello,

I'm ordering a new S Class and was wondering what you all would recommend as far as either going with a long term ceramic coating ( I've been told these will last for 4 or 5 years ) vs something like a good synthetic sealant applied every six months? I've heard that ceramic is great for ease of washing and drying as it creates a slippery surface that allows dust and grass clippings etc. to slide right off. But I've heard that it makes any potential paint corrections very difficult as well.

I was wondering if anyone has had this done and can tell me what your long term experiences have been? Does it hold up as well and as long as claimed, does it protect the car from scratches or rock chips? Also, how does it fair at protecting against water spotting issues?

Thanks!

I don't know about ceramic coating but I did get Opti-Coat applied to three of my cars and it seems to work well at keeping them cleaner longer. One of the cars is a MB with Diamond White, another is Obsidian Black, both seem to look great longer than their predecessors.

Maybe OptiCoat is a type of ceramic coating, I am not sure.

Opticoat is a coating - not ceramic. I would definitely consider a coating. I put Pinnacle Black Label coatings on my car and they make a great difference. I would probably get it done commercially if I had to do it again - much easier. The key for any coating is that the paint needs to be perfect.

My experience has been great. The paint looks very shiny and it is easier to clean. For extra protection I have a layer of spray wax on top.

I coat my new cars with 22PLE! I had this on my 2011 E and my 2013 SLK and they lasted a very long time as I maintained the coating with Opti-Seal or CarPro every wash.

I looked up 22PLE on the web... interesting product! Did you apply it yourself or was it done by a professional detailer? The online videos make it seem quite simple to apply and use.

I applied it myself - in fact, I just applied it to the new C300 I bought a few days ago!

It takes a few hours, especially for the W222, but the results are worth it. Just make sure you don't park it outside for 8-12 hours to avoid contaminating the coating while it's curing, and you should be good to go after that.

I tried using Opti-Coat, but got some streaking, while 22PLE is super easy to use and lasted the entire lease period on my SLK with periodic quick waxing/sealing. If you decide to use it, can't wait to see results! Here are quick pics I took just now! I applied it to my S550 back in July and the C300 last night.

Wow! that sure looks nice! I will have to give it a try, although I will have to wait until the temps increase to do that (currently -1 F in Fargo, going down to -19 F tonight!).

BTW, is that palladium silver on one of the cars? that's the color of my S550..

Yes, the C300 is Palladium Silver and the S550 is Anthracite Blue. Coatings really make the metallic paints sparkle!

Is the fluid colorless when it goes on? if it is, how can you tell if you've missed a few spots when applying it? Also, did you buy the kit or just the bottle of the fluid?
