Front camera?

How does the front camera work on the W222? Does it come on when you get to like 2-3 mph? Curious.

Either when you press the 360 degree button, or you go into reverse it pops out of the grille in the front and the camera at the back. I'm not sure what happens when I'm driving, but I'm guessing its from the camera in front of the mirror which does the 360 degree radar.

Surround View Cameras are completely different from the radar sensors on the car. The front camera on the 360 for the S pops out from the grille when in operation.

Interesting. Any videos of this?

Was wondering how this would work for parking spaces that have concrete blocks at the end. These are too low for parktronic to pick up on the w221, and wonering how the w222 helps with this, from hitting a curb. Can you see an actual live image of the front when pulling into a parking space? And if you can, the only way to turn on the front cam, is to put it in reverse first? I'm mainly referring to parking in a spacer that has concrete curb at the front.

All you have to do for the front camera to turn on is to push the camera button to the left of the steering wheel when slowly pulling into a parking spot with concrete blocks at end of the parking space. You see everything in front of you, including the blocks very clearly, and this lets you know when to stop so that you don't hit the blocks. You can also raise the height to diminish the chance of hitting the curb. I use the front camera a lot in this manner when pulling into a parking place.

Yeah, I said both as I didn't know if he was talking about the radar sensors, which I think are in front of the mirror or the 360 degree/surround view cameras which pop out of the grilles and underneath the mirror.

For the 222:
Distronic radar is mounted behind the plastic shield in the center of the grille

Parktronic sensors are the round units (6 in front, 6 in rear) built into the bumpers

Night vision IR camera is mounted in the grille (visible)

Active Lane Keeping/High Beam Assist use the two cameras mounted in the windshield near where the rear view mirror is

360 camera: 1 on top of front grille (behind motorized cover), 1 under each exterior side view mirror, 1 on trunk under the chrome trim (behind a motorized cover)

As explained earlier you can either hit a switch to activate the camera (and use the dial to cycle between different views) or reverse then drive (and it stays on the screen until you go above 20mph or fiddle with different menus in the COMAND). I've got the same system on my W212 Facelift and you can absolutely see the cement blocks clearly. The side cameras also give me a good view of the front or rear wheels so I can see how to maneuver around curbs. It's one of the most useful options I got for my E especially since I'm very careful with curbs/parking stops.

The COMAND an also stitch images from all four cameras to create a "birdseye view" which looks like you're 10 feet above the car looking down to maneuver around spaces.

The 360 degree camera, is in the front grille. I'm 100% sure of this, as when I press the button, it uses the camera in the grille and then when I disengage it, it closes. I found a small extract showing this, and I'll upload a video later :
"The first camera is located in the radiator grille. Another is located in each of the exterior mirror housings and one in the boot lid, above the number plate. Using the image data from the four cameras, the system calculates a number of different views – including a true-colour representation of your car and its surroundings from a birds-eye view." I know the article isn't for the 222 but the cameras do come out of that location for me. The two pictures you can see here :

Oh yeah, sorry noticed what you were saying. I didn't mention parktronic sensors as I don't know where they are, I'm talking about the 360/surround camera and sensors.

This and the new version of lane keeping assist are great features for the S-class. I wish my W221 had both of these features.

Not the topic of this thread but the Night View Assist is actually using two cameras, another one at the top of the windshield.

The two cameras for Active Lane Keeping Assist are usually called "a stereo camera". I guess a matter of opinion if that is one or two cameras.

Thanks for clarifying. I've always wondered what that third sensor is in the windscreen.
