Hey guys, I've been lurking on this forums for years and finally decided to register. My father is thinking about getting an S. What do you guys think about obsidian black?

My dad owns S-Class in obsidan black it's really nice and has luxurious, prestigious look especially at night but the main problem is you need to wash the car daily,it gets dirty really fast although I still prefer it over any other colour.

My very first brand new car way back when was black. It stayed that way for about 6 months, until I had it repainted. My wife's first new Mercedes was black. It stayed that way for about a year, until, yes, you guessed it... It was repainted... Notice a trend here?

Besides, what does it truly matter what any of us think of Obsidian Black? What your father thinks of it is the only thing that matters...

Depends if he wants metallic black (obsidian) or regular black, the former is easier to keep clean since the flake tends to mask dirt, fine scratches, etc

Benz has been in our family since the 90s but we've never had any shade of black. However, I'm convinced that the W222 looks simply amazing in it and it has every option we'd like so we're settling for the obsidian.

I think Magnetite Black is the best black for the S class.

And down here in Texas, that black car takes on another 30dF of interior temperature* in the <ahem> mild summer weather we tend to have <now and again>.

(*) compared to something white.

I understand that Magnetite is classified as black, but it's really a very dark, deep grey. It's a stunning color but it lacks the "depth" (for lack of a better word) that a true black has. Search this forum and you'll find discussion about how some find obsidian frustrating because it looks "dusty" when not completely clean. I think that concern would be compounded with a magnetite car. People unaware of the subtlety of the color would just look at a magnetite car and either think it was dusty or dirty.

I like the look of a true black rather than the metallics. I enjoy car car so the extra upkeep wouldn't be so bad.

I got obsesidan black too but my concern is does washing the car regularly affects the paint? Especially high pressure water like washing services from gas stations

I'm not going to car wash stations. I don't even allow the dealership to wash my car.
I hand wash it, with good equipment.
This way i never had any paint issues and I drive black cars since 20 years.

The "touchless" high pressure systems are the worst for paint. They have to use stronger soaps/chemicals to get the dirt off.

Magnetite nonsense

I don’t know why Mercedes would even use magnetite. The worst excuse for black. Can’t call that black.

My magnetite S. Saving money to make it 040 Black.

And they will destroy your Center Caps in.... The Chemicals will eat those caps very quickly making them cloudy.
